Denzel Washington Had ‘Great Evening’ at Cannes 2025 Despite Heated Exchange With Photographer, Says Actor’s Rep

On the extraordinary evening of the 78th Cannes Film Festival, May 19th in France, I, an ardent admirer, couldn’t help but notice that a minor red carpet incident didn’t even come close to eclipsing the radiant atmosphere of celebration surrounding Denzel Washington.

At the premiere for his new movie, Highest 2 Lowest, the 70-year-old actor Denzel Washington was joined by director Spike Lee and co-star A$AP Rocky. On the red carpet, a photographer seemed to try and grab Denzel’s arm for attention. Denzel then sternly said, “Cut it out, cut it out,” and moved his arm away, returning to his fellow cast members afterward. Footage of this heated exchange quickly spread across social media.

Regardless of the tense scenario, Denzel’s representative assured E! News that the incident did not spoil his night. The representative shared with the publication on May 20th that it had been an excellent evening for Denzel.

In the theater, Denzel Washington was celebrated for his legendary career and his part in the movie, marking his reunion with Spike Lee after two decades. Emotion swelled within the actor as Lee unexpectedly bestowed upon him an honorary Palme d’Or.

In his acceptance speech, Denzel expressed that he was both surprised and emotional about the situation, stating, “I’m thrilled to have the chance to work together with my ‘brother from another mother’ once more, and it’s an honor to be back at Cannes.

He commented, “This gathering is extraordinarily fortunate, as we produce films and adorn ourselves in elegant attire like tuxedos. It’s a dream come true, and I am immensely grateful. From deep within, I express my sincere appreciation to each one of you.

In this production, A$AP Rocky, Jeffrey Wright (portraying Paul Christopher), Wendell Pierce (as Gabe), Ice Spice (as Marisol Cepeda), and Ilfenesh Hadera (as Pam King) are among the main stars. The movie adapts the fundamental storyline of Akira Kurosawa’s High and Low, with a few adjustments here and there.

The movie is set to premiere in U.S. theaters on August 22. Starting from September 5, you can stream it on Apple TV+.
