As a lifelong sci-fi enthusiast who grew up with the original Star Wars trilogy, I can empathize with Denis Villeneuve‘s sentiments. The Star Wars franchise was a significant part of my childhood, and I too felt betrayed by the Ewoks in Return of the Jedi. The sudden shift from epic space opera to cuddly teddy bear creatures was jarring and left me feeling that the magic had been lost.
Despite being lauded primarily for his contributions to the Dune series, Denis Villeneuve, a renowned Canadian filmmaker, stands as one of the industry’s most significant figures, particularly in the realm of science-fiction films, where he has demonstrated a knack for excelling. Villeneuve is a director with a distinctive voice and unwavering commitment to his vision, never shying away from expressing it fully.
Fans are eager for the chance to see him take the helm of a Star Wars film, given his renowned position within the genre and the exceptional work he’s demonstrated on Dune. We firmly believe that he would excel in such a project. However, it appears that Villeneuve has no plans to direct a Star Wars movie at this time.
In an interview on The Town podcast, Denis Villeneuve shared his association with the Star Wars universe and the disillusionment that led him to decline the opportunity to direct a Star Wars film. Here’s what went down:
It’s common knowledge that when the first “Star Wars” film debuted, the franchise initially struggled but managed to overcome numerous challenges and eventually solidified its place as a timeless classic, propelling George Lucas into immediate fame. Villeneuve shared that he was an ardent fan of the series as a child, with “The Empire Strikes Back” being his favorite, a film often praised by many as the pinnacle of the entire franchise.
If you’re an avid Star Wars enthusiast, wouldn’t it be natural to dream about creating your own Star Wars project? Given Denis Villeneuve’s reputation, one might assume he’d have such a chance, correct? Yet, why hasn’t he taken it up? It appears that Villeneuve himself isn’t interested in working on Star Wars. The reason for his reluctance stems from a past grievance dating back to 1983, as he disclosed in a podcast interview.
As a ten-year-old kid, Star Wars’ “The Empire Strikes Back” captivated me like nothing else ever had before. It was as if each viewing left a lasting impression on my mind, much like a silver bullet. To put it simply, this movie was the one I eagerly awaited more than any other in my life so far. Watching it repeatedly on screen left me traumatized, yet I couldn’t get enough of it.
I’m really fond of Star Wars, but I have to admit that things took an unexpected turn in 1983 with Return of the Jedi. At that time, I was 15 years old and my friend and I were so invested that we even contemplated hailing a cab to LA just to discuss the series with George Lucas. We felt quite frustrated back then. To this day, I still find the Ewoks a bit too comical for my taste, leaning more towards a kid’s comedy rather than the epic space saga I had envisioned.
I found that Star Wars has solidified into its own mythos, becoming quite rigid and formulaic, devoid of any unexpected twists. Consequently, creating something similar to Star Wars feels like trying to follow an already established blueprint with no room for innovation.

This shouldn’t come as such a big surprise, as many people were not satisfied with the introduction of the Ewoks when they debuted. They were seen as an example of lowering the franchise’s quality, and much like Jar-Jar Binks in the Prequel Trilogy, they were disliked. In Villeneuve’s case, it all went so far that he doesn’t even want to work on the franchise anymore, which is a shame considering how he could probably bring a breath of fresh air to a franchise that has been struggling in recent years.
