Demon Slayer: Hashira Deaths That Hit Different 😭

In the anime “Demon Slayer,” the Hashira are regarded as the strongest members of the Demon Slayer Corps. They possess advanced Breathing Techniques and typically have the ability to overcome most demons, except for Muzan Kibutsuji. However, despite their immense power, the Hashira are not invulnerable; they’ve faced deaths or been defeated throughout the series. This article will provide a rundown of all the Hashira who met their end during the main storyline in “Demon Slayer.

In this analysis, it’s important to clarify that, as the manga comes to an end, all the Hashira characters have met their demise. They weren’t invincible and passed away due to various reasons such as old age or other incidents. However, instances of their deaths not related to the main storyline won’t be covered in this piece. This article will focus solely on the Hashira who perished or were killed during the key events, specifically the Corps’ confrontation with Muzan and Tanjiro (who had been infected by Muzan). The Hashira will be arranged according to their order of death, following a chronological sequence.

Jigoro Kuwajima

Manner of Death: Seppuku
Time of Death: Unknown (sometime before the main plot)

I was once the teacher for Zenitsu and Kaigaku, known as the Pillar of Thunder. While Kaigaku diligently learned every Lightning Breathing technique except the initial one, Zenitsu struggled with mastery beyond just the first style, mainly due to his lack of practice.

He performed ritual suicide when his ex-apprentice switched allegiance to acquire demonic powers, thus demonstrating a painful and prolonged demise as no one could decapitate him while he bled out. Ultimately, this tragic event spurred Zenitsu to assume the role of the Thunder Pillar, seeking revenge for his master’s death by eliminating Kaigaku.

Kanae Kocho

Manner of Death: Fatally wounded by Doma
Time of Death: Unknown (sometime before the main plot)

Kanae and her sister led a contented life alongside their parents until an evil entity intruded into their home, slaying the parents. On the brink of taking their lives too, Gyomei Himejima made a timely appearance to shield them. He chose to escort them, driven by a desire to protect others from suffering the same fate. In time, both sisters adopted the role of Demon Slayers, refining unique techniques and swiftly advancing within the organization.

Sadly, Kanae’s life met a tragic end when she confronted Upper Moon number two Doma, who overpowered her and left her fatally injured. As Doma prepared to consume her, she was compelled to flee because Kanae was already in the process of transforming or “dawning.” In her final breaths, Kanae pleaded with Shinobu to abandon her Demon Slayer lifestyle and live as a normal girl. However, Shinobu swore revenge for Kanae’s death instead. Before succumbing, Kanae provided an accurate description of the demon that took her life.

Kyojuro Rengoku

Manner of Death: Killed while fighting Akaza
Time of Death: Mugen Train Arc (Chapters 65-66)

As the eldest son of the Rengoku household, I stepped into my father’s shoes as the Flame Hashira upon his sudden retirement. Unfortunately, a fierce confrontation with my longstanding adversary, Akaza, led to my demise. The battle was intense, showcasing prodigious powers and devastating attacks from both sides. In the end, I sustained numerous wounds, including deep cuts and organ damage, while Akaza miraculously healed from the blows thanks to his regenerative abilities.

This time, Kyojuro rises with resolve, declaring that he will complete his tasks and no one will meet their end. Using the ninth style of fire breathing, he strikes at the demon, who retaliates with an attack. The skirmish was swift, and when the dust cleared, Akaza had struck him, delivering a fatal blow to his chest.

At that pivotal moment, Kyojuro was reminded of a conversation with his mother who had told him that a powerful individual like himself was born to shield the vulnerable. This thought galvanized him, compelling him to hold on tenaciously to the demon’s arm, despite its attempt to decapitate it. In response, Akaza acted swiftly, aiming his fist at Kyojuro’s head with the intent to end the fight, but Kyojuro managed to intervene and prevent it.

Instead of directly engaging in a fight, Tanjiro and Inosuke decided to prevent Akaza from fleeing their superior’s grasp. Knowing that daybreak was imminent, they aimed to keep Akaza trapped. Regrettably, he managed to slip away before the hunters could grab him, thus losing another arm in the process.

Shinobu Kocho

Manner of Death: Eaten by Doma
Time of Death: Infinity Castle Arc (Chapter 143)

In their home, Shinobu was the youngest child of the Kocho family; she was raised with warmth and care from her parents and her elder sister Kanae. However, one fateful day, a Devil took her parents’ lives right in front of her eyes, shattering her happiness. Fortunately, on the brink of death, they were miraculously rescued by Gyōmei Himejima who eliminated the demon.

After Doma had murdered her sister, Shinobu vowed revenge and later confronted Doma in a battle, ultimately losing her life. However, Shinobu was aware that her fate lay with Doma, so she prepared for this eventuality by collaborating with Tamayo to inject herself with an overpowering quantity of wisteria poison within her system. The dosage was approximately thirty-seven kilograms – a staggering seven hundred times the minimal amount required to kill a Demon.

For over a year, I’ve been slowly ingesting a deadly toxin, praying it would either claim my life or render me so feeble that I could be swiftly dispatched if the Demon devoured me first. Miraculously, the plan worked, and now my disciple Kanao, accompanied by Inosuke Hashibira, are tasked with exacting revenge on Doma – a man who had been poisoned in the same manner as I. They will bring his life to an end, avenging my death through this act of retribution.

Muichiro Tokito

Cause of Demise: Fallen in combat versus Kokushibo
Timing of Demise: During the Infinity Castle Arc, specifically Chapter 175

Muichiro is the youngest son in a family that makes its living as lumberjacks. Tragedy struck when he and his twin brother Yuichiro lost their parents at a very young age. Their mother succumbed to bronchitis contracted from a common cold, while their father ventured out seeking medicinal herbs for his illness and ended up falling off a cliff. Left to fend for themselves, the brothers managed to survive together. However, Muichiro embodied the compassionate and nurturing spirit of his parents, whereas Yuichiro took on a detached and indifferent demeanor. Frequent disagreements ensued between them, with Muichiro often feeling that being with his brother was like living in hell.

Following their encounter with Kokushibo, an ancestor of Muichiro, Genya struggles to speak up. He calls out the names of his comrades, Gyomei and Muichiro, to check on them. Gyomei approaches Genya and assures him that everyone is okay except for Muichiro. Upon hearing this, Genya urges Gyomei to aid the injured mist hashira. In response to his plea, Gyomei positions Sanemi, who is unconscious, before Genya as proof that he’s alright.

Gyomei gently indicates toward Muichiro’s severely injured body, expressing that without both their efforts, it wouldn’t have been possible for them to behead the higher-ranking demon. Overwhelmed with emotion, Gyomei closes Muichiro’s eyes and swears to fulfill their mission of vanquishing Muzan.

Mitsuri Kanroji

Method of Demise: Perished in combat against Muzan Kibutsuji

Time of Expiration: Occurred during the Sunrise Countdown Arc (Chapter 200)

Mitsuri hails from a family with six male siblings and parents. Remarkably, she possesses a unique trait – her muscle density is eight times stronger than the norm for humans. At first sight, she seems like any other girl. Yet, her strength surpasses expectations; even her mother was astounded to witness her lifting stones that were ten times heavier than what her body structure would suggest an ordinary person could manage.

In the course of events, she eventually assumed the role of the Love Pillar within the Demon Slayer Corps and took part in the climactic battle against Muzan Kibutsuji. Regrettably, she met her end during this confrontation, though the specifics of her demise remain undisclosed, as it was discovered only after the fight’s conclusion – much like the fates of the other Hashira who fell in this decisive battle.

Gyomei Himejima

As a devoted cinephile, I’d rephrase it as follows: “I met my end in a fierce battle against the formidable Muzan Kibutsuji, during the dramatic Sunrise Countdown Arc, which unfolded in Chapter 200.

Prior to his role as a Demon Slayer, Gyomei resided with eight other orphaned kids in an abandoned sanctuary. Given their location was frequently inhabited by demons, Gyomei took precautions to protect them all. He often lit incense made from Wisteria flowers, which served as a deterrent for these dangerous creatures. However, one fateful night, a rule-breaking child (later identified as Kaigaku) ventured beyond the temple’s boundaries.

As I reflect on the gripping conclusion to Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba, it’s clear that my role as a member of the elite Demon Slayer Corps was not without consequence. In the climactic confrontation with Muzan Kibutsuji, I gave my all in the battle that would ultimately claim my life. The specifics of my demise remain shrouded in mystery, much like those of my fellow Hashira who fell during this decisive clash.

Obanai Iguro

Cause of Demise: Perished in combat against Muzan Kibutsuji
Timing of Passing: During the Sunrise Countdown Arc (Chapter 200)

In my humble opinion, as a cinephile reviewing this captivating tale, I must say that the protagonist, Obanai, hails from a lineage of thieves and rogues stretching back over three centuries. An extraordinary twist, however, is that for 370 years, nothing but female offspring were born in his family. This peculiarity was viewed as a curse by his kin, leading to Obanai’s confinement like a caged beast since the moment he drew his first breath.

After liberating him from his enclosure, they acquainted Obanai with a woman who bore upper-body similarities to a serpentine creature, but was in fact a demoness. At the time of his birth, Obanai was destined for sacrifice by this woman, yet her fascination with his peculiar eyes led to him being spared until he could grow larger as her sustenance.

In my perspective as a movie reviewer, this captivating character served valiantly as the Serpent Hashira within the Demon Slayer Corps, engaging in the climactic struggle against Muzan Kibutsuji. Regrettably, he paid the ultimate price during these battles, with the specifics of his demise remaining a mystery, much like the fates of the other Hashira who fell in this decisive confrontation. The aftermath of the battle revealed only their tragic endings.
