DEADPOOL & WOLVERINE’s Cameos in the Void Are Epic and Weird

As a huge fan of Marvel movies, I must confess that some of the most shocking and delightful cameos have graced our screens in recent years. And let me tell you, none have left me as speechless as the unexpected returns of some beloved actors to their iconic roles.

Suspecting that Deadpool and Wolverine would feature cameos from previous Marvel films produced by Twentieth Century Fox, we weren’t surprised to see numerous characters from the pre-MCU timeline in “The Void.” This Multiversal wasteplace exists at the end of time, where discarded elements reside. The malevolent Cassandra Nova, Professor X’s sister, governs this realm. A motley crew of forgotten heroes from earlier Marvel movies confront her, which the film refers to as “the Others.” However, we could also label them as “The Avengers of the Void” for a more descriptive title. Here are some unexpected heroes who joined this bizarre MCU super team:

Elektra (Jennifer Garner)

Jennifer Garner reprised her role as Elektra Nachios, the ninja assassin from 2003’s “Daredevil” and its spin-off film, in the latest project. However, neither of these films were well-received by critics or audiences. Nevertheless, Garner proved herself to be impressive in her appearances in “Deadpool” and “Wolverine.” She effectively took down Cassandra Nova’s minions with her twin sai swords, evoking memories of her stellar performance in “Alias.” Furthermore, she delivered the funniest line in the movie, poking fun at her former co-star and ex-husband Ben Affleck, who famously portrayed Daredevil alongside her.

Blade (Wesley Snipes)

In an exciting turn of events, Wesley Snipes reprised his iconic role as Blade, the groundbreaking Marvel character, in “Deadpool & Wolverine.” Known for his formidable blend of human and vampire traits, Blade was the star of the first successful Marvel movie back in 1998. His appearance paved the way for the Marvel Cinematic Universe as we know it today. Snipes’ return was unexpected for several reasons: there were reported tensions between him and co-star Ryan Reynolds during the filming of “Blade Trinity,” and the Blade films were produced by New Line Cinema, not Twentieth Century Fox (now owned by Disney). Luckily, any past disputes were put aside, allowing Snipes to once again showcase his remarkable talents on screen.

The Human Torch (Chris Evans)

In an unexpected twist during “Deadpool & Wolverine,” audiences were taken aback as Chris Evans, a pivotal figure in the MCU, made his appearance. However, this wasn’t the return of Captain America. Instead, Evans donned the role of Johnny Storm, also known as the Human Torch, in “The Fantastic Four.” The fate of the rest of his family in the Void remains uncertain, but Johnny joined forces with the Avengers from that realm until Cassandra Nova mercilessly stripped his flesh and ended his life. At least, fans got to hear Evans shout “Flame On!” once more and let loose with a generous amount of cursing that would leave Steve Rogers blushing profoundly.

Gambit (Channing Tatum)

If you found the cameos surprising, wait till you hear about an actor who never got to embody the Marvel character he deeply desired. Channing Tatum brings the fiery Cajun X-Man, Gambit, to life on screen, donning Jim Lee’s iconic costume as seen in “X-Men: The Animated Series.” Some may find the costume and Tatum’s Cajun accent a tad absurd in live-action. Yet, it was this very absurdity that made Tatum’s portrayal so delightful. This role had been a long-awaited dream for Tatum, an ardent Gambit fan. He was initially slated to play the card-wielding Remy LeBeau back in 2014 for a standalone film. The production kept getting postponed until Disney acquired Fox and shelved the project. Thankfully, Marvel Studios eventually allowed Tatum to bring his cherished role to fruition.

X-23 (Dafne Keen)

In the makeshift Avengers squad, Dafne Keen’s character, Laura Kinney/X-23, played by her in “Logan,” serves as the team’s core. She is no longer the young girl from the previous film but a grown woman. Her combat skills, honed by her father Wolverine, are evident. In this movie, she aids the Wolverine in regaining his former heroic self. Remember, it was her father who sacrificed himself to protect her and numerous other mutant children. She recognizes the same strength in this Logan. The scenes between them are remarkable, and we eagerly anticipate seeing her on any future MCU X-Men roster.
