‘Deadpool & Wolverine’ Writers What Happened to Two Characters Who Did Not Appear in the Movie

As a seasoned gamer with a soft spot for superhero movies, especially those featuring my beloved Deadpool and Wolverine, I must say that the recent revelation about the almost-appearances of Ben Affleck’s Daredevil and Josh Brolin’s Cable in the latest Deadpool & Wolverine flick has left me both intrigued and a tad disappointed.

Many movie enthusiasts eagerly await the release of the year’s most exciting film, a collaboration between Deadpool and Wolverine, currently screening worldwide. Starring Hugh Jackman as Wolverine and Ryan Reynolds as Deadpool, this blockbuster hit has been receiving outstanding reviews due to its immense success in cinemas globally. Fans are continually discovering hidden references (Easter Eggs) scattered throughout the movie.

Although a significant number of Easter Eggs were included in the film, there were several intriguing characters who nearly made it but ultimately didn’t due to various factors. Despite having access to numerous individuals, the writers chose not to include them for specific reasons. In this article, we will focus on two of these characters that hold special significance.

To clarify, it’s been disclosed that the writers had the ability to incorporate any Fox or MCU character into their work, and the list of possible cameos was extensive and brimming with well-known names. Although many viewers anticipated the return of two specific characters, they were noticeably absent from the film, and the writers have now explained why this was the case.

During an interview with IndieWire, screenwriters Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick shared some intriguing insights into the production of the movie, including a fascinating tidbit about Ben Affleck’s Daredevil potentially making a cameo. The writers elaborated on the fate of this specific concept:

Which character from the Fox Universe were you particularly keen on obtaining but unfortunately couldn’t?

Reese: I think the answer’s nobody. I think everybody we asked said yes.

Wernick: Daredevil we wanted.

Reese: Did we want to get Ben [Affleck]? We never asked Ben though, I don’t think.

Wernick: At some point, Ben was on the list.

Reese mentioned that he was on a list, but it didn’t seem like he was ever included in the actual script or asked to participate. One of the delightful aspects of “Deadpool” is that its popularity made it simpler and simpler to bring more people into the film. In essence, Ryan already had many of these individuals’ contact details saved in his phonebook, not necessarily a Rolodex, but essentially the same thing.

In the storyline, the character portrayed by Josh Brolin was Cable, a significant figure from earlier Deadpool films. However, for reasons explained by the writers, he didn’t end up being included in the final version.

Was there any iteration where you brought Josh Brolin back as Cable?

Wernick: Indeed, we had the chance to connect with almost everyone, didn’t we? Creatively speaking, we aimed to honor characters or individuals who didn’t receive a fitting conclusion at Fox. On the Cable side, he was undoubtedly considered, but unfortunately, he only appeared in “Deadpool 2.” As a result, we had planned to give him a more conclusive ending since, based on our speculation, he might reappear in the Fox-Marvel merged universe. However, he didn’t make it into this project, which is regrettable. We admire him and wish we could have included him, but alas.
