As a die-hard fan of the Merc with a Mouth, I must say that Ryan Reynolds has truly outdone himself with Deadpool & Wolverine. The audacity and wit of those jokes, aimed at celebrities and even the bigwigs of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, left me in stitches! It’s clear that Reynolds’ real-life humor is a perfect match for his on-screen persona.
As a die-hard fan, let me tell you, Deadpool and Wolverine have solidified Ryan Reynolds’ Wade Wilson, the Merc With a Mouth, as one of the most vulgar-talking characters in the Marvel Cinematic Universe that I adore! The movie was packed with jokes targeting celebrities and sensitive topics, which could have stirred up some controversy. However, despite the potential for scandal, jabs at Hugh Jackman’s divorce, Bennifer (Ben Affleck and Jennifer Lopez), and even our franchise’s patriarch Kevin Feige were a daring move from the creators that I found incredibly entertaining!
Director, writer, and producer Shawn Levy revealed that they were given free rein to go down and dirty with their jokes, which they did. However, there was one joke that was objected to and removed from the final cut.
In simpler terms, Levy advised Entertainment Weekly that it’s best not to bully or make fun of people who are less powerful than you, instead focusing on those who can handle humor well. He shared an example involving Hugh, where the joke was made, but Hugh found it amusing and responded with hearty laughter. However, the joke had to be removed for some reason.
Levy chose not to disclose the initial joke he and Reynolds had agreed to keep secret until their demise. But, he did share that the remark was replaced with another “equally crude dialogue” about Pinocchio pushing his face into Deadpool’s rear end and starting to lie compulsively.
“Reynolds proposed this substitution himself, as he often does with his bold ideas!” (or) “It was Reynolds who suggested this swap, showing off his characteristic audacity!”
It’s not surprising that the comedic style of the Red Notice actor resembled Deadpool’s, given that Reynolds played an active role in the film’s creation, both as a producer and a scriptwriter.
In collaboration with Reynolds, Levy played a significant role in developing the script that ultimately breathed life into Deadpool on the big screen, as he was instrumental in the making of the character’s debut movie. Disney and Feige granted them a high degree of creative freedom, allowing them to shape their project as they saw fit. Before joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe as a director, Levy had already demonstrated his skills in the superhero filmmaking domain.
Instead of his initial fears, Levy discovered that directing this particular project might actually offer him more creative control than any other film he’d worked on before. As he put it, “This movie, being the largest one I’ve ever made, could very well grant me the most artistic freedom I’ve ever experienced.”
Deadpool & Wolverine is now playing in theaters.
