The “Dead or Alive” series has been capturing attention since its launch in 1996. It’s renowned for its fast-moving combat sequences, but it’s also well-known for its extravagant, attention-grabbing elements, including something called ‘jiggle physics’. This franchise is often credited with pioneering this concept. Despite Koei Tecmo’s statement in 2018 about toning things down, the series’ reputation remains unchanged.
When you look up the ESRB ratings for the game Dead or Alive, you’ll typically find ‘Sexual Themes’ and ‘Partial Nudity’ highlighted. These games are often described with references to revealing clothing or suggestive scenes, making it clear that the intended players might have mature preferences.
It’s worth noting that despite creating bold and provocative content, Koei Tecmo is deeply committed to preserving the integrity of its characters. In fact, Tomotoshi Nishimura, head of the company’s legal team, has likened these characters to ‘daughters’, demonstrating a protective attitude towards them. This may seem unexpected given their design, but it underscores their dedication to safeguarding their creative works.
According to GameWatch reports, Koei Tecmo welcomes fans creating their own art or stories based on the franchise. However, there are boundaries. If fan content ventures into mature themes, the company takes action. They’ve reportedly removed around 200 to 300 fan-made stories (doujinshi) and thousands of other pieces of fanart that they deemed inappropriate. Some removals were due to copyright issues, while many focused on what Koei Tecmo considers as character distortions that could potentially be harmful.
Nishimura made it clear that Koei Tecmo aims to preserve the authenticity of these characters. In simpler terms, they will not allow any content that they deem disrespectful towards their creations.
The irony lies in the fact that it’s the company’s depiction of these characters that fuels fan-made creations. Yet, Koei Tecmo has made it clear that they will act if fans overstep boundaries, despite the fact that the company itself may have initially inspired such suggestive character designs.
The situation is quite intricate; they’re trying to capitalize on the show’s popularity while also drawing a line when things become inappropriate or overstep boundaries.
