De La Soul’s powerful comeback sparks a creative renaissance

The iconic hip-hop group De La Soul has released a new album called Cabin In The Sky. This is their first full project in almost ten years, following up on 2016’s And the Anonymous Nobody….

Man, listening to De La Soul’s Cabin In The Sky is bittersweet. It’s awesome to get new music from them, but it’s also their first album since we lost Trugoy the Dove last year. It’s tough knowing Posdnuos and Maseo are carrying the torch now as a duo – it just doesn’t feel the same without Dave.

Man, after waiting so long for a new album, especially after losing a member, I was really curious about what De La Soul would do with Cabin In The Sky. Honestly? It totally blew me away. It’s a seriously great album and I can’t wait to really dig into it.

Here’s what makes De La Soul’s Cabin In the Sky so special

Playing Cabin In The Sky felt special to me. It’s like a really heartfelt tribute to Trugoy, and honestly, it felt like A Tribe Called Quest was still evolving their sound – but in a way that totally stayed true to what makes them, them. It’s a quick listen at around 70 minutes, but it packs a punch.

Throughout the album, De La Soul frequently references their late friend, Dave, using his actual name. They openly express their grief over his loss and discuss how they’re moving forward without him.

Trugoy’s voice appears on several tracks after his passing, including verses on “The Package” and “Patty Cake,” and a standout solo performance on the closing song, “Don’t Push Me.” It’s wonderful to hear his talent one last time, and these may be his final contributions to a De La Soul album.

The spirit of Cabin in the Sky is powerfully present throughout this album and really stands out. Even when the songs aren’t specifically about that story, they’re still excellent.

The album offers a lot of variety, exploring different perspectives on universal themes like love, personal growth, and hardship. Despite covering so many ideas, De La Soul manages to create a record that feels unified and complete.

One minute you’re enjoying verses from Pos and Killer Mike, who are lovingly rapping about their mothers in “A Quick 16 for Mama.” The next, De La Soul is exploring a woman’s journey to overcome a cheating and undeserving partner in “Just How It Is (Sometimes).”

Despite trying new things, De La Soul still sounds like themselves on this album. The production feels modern and exciting, and the guest artists add a lot, but everything blends seamlessly into their signature style.

Even after all these years, De La Soul continues to show audiences what’s always made them unique. It’s rare for artists to maintain that spark throughout a long career, but De La Soul, 36 years after their first release, still delivers with their signature talent.

It’s tough to follow up a string of amazing albums, but Cabin In The Sky is truly excellent. I believe it stands up with De La Soul’s very best work and deserves a lot of recognition.

De La Soul has consistently delivered quality albums, but their more recent work hasn’t quite reached the heights of their earlier music. This new album changes that – it’s their best release since 1996’s Stakes Is High. If you’re a fan of De La Soul, you’ll definitely want to give this one a listen.
