Since the end of last year, DC Studios has been actively seeking a director for their forthcoming Clayface film. At a certain juncture, they also contemplated J.A. Bayona over the festive period. But since then, there hasn’t been much news on that front.
Previously, it was rumored that Jeff Wadlow (of “Imaginary” and “Fantasy Island”) and James Watkins (known for “Speak No Evil”) were potential candidates for the role. However, recent information suggests that Wadlow was never a contender and will not be considered. Contrariwise, Watkins has yet to sit down with DC’s executives, but it is anticipated that they will meet soon.
Mike Flanagan, an experienced director, wrote the script for the movie, yet he won’t be directing it because of his obligations towards a television adaptation of Carrie and a revival of The Exorcist.
One key point that’s being debated about this project is its filming location. Although DC has a production base in England, where Superman was filmed and Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow is now being produced, it seems unlikely that Clayface will be shot there unless a British director is appointed. Instead, the movie, which boasts a budget of around $40 million, is exploring various possibilities such as Vancouver, Toronto, New Jersey, and Atlanta for filming.
Regarding the plotline, Clayface will delve into horror aspects, primarily revolving around the popular depiction of the character: a struggling actor in B-movies who uses an enigmatic substance for relevance. However, rather than merely reviving his acting career, he obtains the power to mold his face and body into a pliable mass of clay.
According to James Gunn’s confirmation, this project is now an integral part of the freshly introduced DC Universe. This implies that it will unfold in the timeline of the revamped DCU created by Gunn and Peter Safran, which was initially set into motion with the animated “Creature Commandos” series.
Details concerning the casting haven’t been disclosed as of now, but there seems to be a link to the Creature Commandos. In the animated series, Alan Tudyk lends his voice to the character Clayface, and director James Gunn has mentioned in the past that actors who voice significant characters in animation will also embody them in live-action adaptations. If this trend continues here, Tudyk could potentially take on the role of Clayface in the film.
