The initial trailer for the upcoming DC Studios and HBO series, Lanterns, has been released, and fans online haven’t reacted positively to it.
As a huge cinema fan, I was really excited for the Green Lantern series trailer, especially with Kyle Chandler as Hal Jordan and Aaron Pierre as John Stewart. Honestly, I – like a lot of other fans – was hoping to see a real sense of the vastness of space and those iconic, glowing energy creations that make Green Lantern so special. It felt like that was missing from what we saw.
However, the preview focuses on a realistic, small-town murder mystery, which fans are jokingly calling “New Country for Old Lanterns” – a reference to the film No Country for Old Men.
As a big fan who’s been all over Reddit, YouTube, and X lately, I’m seeing a lot of people picking apart the new show. They’re noticing things like characters not using their powers when they should, and plot points that just don’t line up with what we already knew about the story. It’s creating a lot of discussion – and some frustration!

Fans Say The Trailer Doesn’t Feel Like Green Lantern
A major complaint is that the teaser barely shows any Green Lantern action at all.
Honestly, this movie doesn’t bother with any of the typical sci-fi tropes – no fancy rings or glowing energy beams anywhere. It feels much more like a hard-boiled police procedural than a story about someone with powers from another world. It’s grounded and gritty, which is a really interesting choice.
Fans on social media quickly noticed.
“How do you make a Lantern teaser with zero actual green?” one viewer asked on X.
Another added: “Where is the GREEN in LANTERNS?”
Reddit reactions echoed the same criticism.
One fan commented that the visuals seemed surprisingly plain, especially considering the story is about space cops who invent bright green weapons using their minds.
One viewer commented that the trailer for the Green Lantern TV show would have been better if it had actually featured some elements of the Green Lantern universe.
Several viewers also compared the tone to crime dramas rather than superhero storytelling.
“Feels like a True Detective hybrid,” one Reddit user wrote.
One person described the series as resembling a typical action drama, but with a connection to the Green Lantern story.

Fans Already ‘Fix’ Hal Jordan’s Suit
Fans are questioning a scene showing multiple Green Lantern costumes in a closet – including one seemingly belonging to Hal Jordan. There are theories that another might be for John Stewart, and a third could be for the original Green Lantern, Alan Scott.
The outfit shown in the teaser looks brown rather than the iconic green.
Fans wasted no time correcting it.
Almost immediately after the trailer was released, social media users began altering images of the costume to revert to the traditional green color. Many felt the version shown in the preview didn’t look like a true Green Lantern outfit.
Reddit users also questioned the concept entirely.
One person commented that they always believed Green Lantern’s uniform was created by the power ring, not a physical suit Hal Jordan actually wore.
In Green Lantern stories, the uniform isn’t usually a physical outfit kept somewhere. Instead, it’s created by the power ring using light.

Continuity Questions About Human Lanterns
Fans also noticed a possible continuity issue in the trailer.
At one point Hal Jordan appears to say he is the only human among the Lanterns.
The DC Universe has already shown us Guy Gardner, played by Nathan Fillion, as a human Green Lantern.
Reddit users immediately picked up on the discrepancy.
“I am the only human? Does he not know Guy Gardner exists?” one fan asked.
Someone else pointed out that Hal had several suits, and that he claimed to be the only human Green Lantern, leading people to wonder what was happening with Guy Gardner.

Ring Communication Also Raises Lore Questions
Another moment in the trailer suggests Hal has difficulty communicating with alien Lanterns.
That line has also sparked debate among fans familiar with the comics.
As a huge Green Lantern fan, I always loved how the power ring just handles communication. It automatically translates everything, which is so cool – it means a Lantern can talk to anyone, from any planet, without a language barrier. It really emphasizes how universal their mission is!
“Hasn’t talked to other alien lanterns? Does the ring not translate?” one Reddit user asked.

Sharing The Ring Confuses Fans
The teaser also shows Hal Jordan and John Stewart sharing a single ring.
That detail also contradicts the established mythology.
Typically, in the comic books, a power ring chooses its wearer, and each Lantern receives a unique ring directly from the Guardians of the Universe. It’s unusual for two Lanterns to share a single ring, according to the established story.
Some fans speculate the show may be using the shared ring as an excuse for budget restraints.
Others see it as another example of the show deviating from the source material.

No Powers In The Trailer
Perhaps the biggest complaint is the near absence of Green Lantern powers.
The teaser trailer mostly avoids special effects, showing only a quick glimpse of Hal in flight and no energy constructs.
That lack of spectacle is fueling speculation about the production’s budget.
This realistic approach seems to confirm reports that David Zaslav, CEO of Warner Bros. Discovery, has been limiting spending on DC Studios projects due to the company’s current financial instability.
It explains why the teaser focuses on grounded storytelling rather than expensive cosmic visuals.

Gunn fans defend trailer
Despite the backlash, some fans are defending the trailer.
Fans of the show contend it was initially presented as a realistic, detective-focused mystery, similar to True Detective, and that any supernatural aspects might be introduced later on in the series.
“It’s a teaser so of course they’re hiding stuff,” one Reddit user wrote.
Someone else suggested the trailer might just show the beginning of the story, with the full scope of the Green Lantern universe revealed later on.
However, the initial response shows that a lot of fans were hoping for a closer resemblance to the classic Green Lantern look.
Instead, at least for now, the teaser looks more like a small-town crime drama without a power ring.
Lanterns is scheduled to premiere on HBO in August 2026.
