Warner Bros.’ 2026 DCU slate continues to look shaky.
After Puck News highlighted Supergirl and Clayface as potential problems for the studio, Variety now shares those concerns, specifically identifying Clayface as a risky project for 2026 in its box office forecast.
And in a major signal of studio confidence (or lack thereof), Supergirl isn’t even listed.

Clayface Gets Called Out in Variety’s 2026 Preview
I was reading Variety’s predictions for the 2026 box office, and it looks like Clayface is in the same category as some other potentially risky movies – like Marvel’s Thunderbolts and Brave New World from last year. Basically, it’s being seen as a bit of a gamble right now, and people aren’t super hyped about it.
People questioned whether anyone had ever heard of Clayface, asking, “Has anyone, on this planet or any other, ever heard of Clayface?”
The website points out that while James Gunn and Peter Safran have successfully relaunched the DC Universe with Superman, not all comic book characters deserve to be made into movies.
Ouch.
Variety acknowledges the film’s unique tone, calling it a disturbing “body-horror” story about an actor who can turn himself into clay. However, the publication’s overall impression of the film is rather critical.

Supergirl Isn’t Even Mentioned
Perhaps most notably, Supergirl isn’t mentioned at all in Variety‘s predictions for 2026—it doesn’t appear even in categories for guaranteed or likely successes.
This fits with earlier reports that Warner Bros. doesn’t see Supergirl as a big, tentpole release. Inside the company, both Supergirl and Clayface are considered lower-priority projects with modest expectations, and there’s not much belief they’ll significantly impact the DC Universe’s success.
The fact that Variety isn’t mentioning a major DC movie suggests the studio doesn’t have high hopes for it.

Clayface Is Still a Mystery, and That’s the Problem
Even though Clayface is supposed to come out on September 11, 2026, we haven’t seen any trailers or heard much excitement about it yet.
People aren’t buzzing about it, and most don’t even know it’s a thing. Even dedicated DC fans are confused about how it connects to the overall DC Universe – they’re especially wondering where Batman fits in!
If Gunn’s Superman couldn’t bring back mainstream audiences, what hope does Clayface have?
