James Gunn’s new DC Universe (DCU) will feature a vast array of superheroes, tracing their existence as far back as 300 years. However, it’s not a metahuman character that has fans buzzing about the DCU; it’s Batman. Although Batman is already present in the DCU, we have only glimpsed him in shadow form in the series Creature Commandos. In a recent interview with Rolling Stone, Gunn emphasized the significance of portraying the DCU’s Batman accurately. Given the character’s importance not just to DC Studios, but also to Warner Bros. as a whole, here’s what he had to share about the Caped Crusader in the new DCU:
“Batman is a cornerstone of our universe. We have to get him right. He’s not just important to DC Studios; he’s crucial for Warner Bros. as a whole. I think we have a responsibility to treat Batman with respect and deliver something that fans will appreciate.
Currently, Batman is the most challenging character within DC Comics for me, on a personal level. Although I’m not writing Batman myself, I collaborate closely with his writer to ensure our depiction is accurate and fitting for such an important figure in DC alongside Wonder Woman. In addition to my ongoing projects, our main focuses are refining the scripts for both Wonder Woman and Batman. It’s crucial that Batman has a purpose, not just because he’s a popular character owned by Warner Bros., but because the DC Universe needs him, and his portrayal should differ from Matt Reeves’ version. I don’t want a campy or humorous take on Batman; instead, I believe I’ve found an approach that captures the essence of the character. I’m working with the writer to bring this vision to life.
If you assumed that James Gunn’s knack for humor might lead to a light-hearted interpretation of the DCU’s Batman similar to Adam West’s campy portrayal, think again. From what we gather so far about the DCU Batman, he will have a “Bat-family,” including multiple Robins, as revealed by Gunn when he announced The Brave and the Bold in 2023. This distinction sets him apart from previous portrayals like Christian Bale, Ben Affleck, and Robert Pattinson. While Batman working with partners might suggest silliness to some, years of animated Batman series have proven otherwise. As a dedicated comic book fan who appreciates works like The Long Halloween and Court of Owls, I trust that Gunn understands the character deeply. In my opinion, it’s best to let him continue developing his vision for Batman.
