At Comic-Con, I was informed by an industry insider in Hollywood that there are ongoing talks about a DC versus Marvel film, and both James Gunn and the Russo Brothers have expressed interest in being involved.
As a die-hard fan of superhero sagas, I can’t help but be excited about the hint dropped recently – the upcoming Deadpool/Batman comic crossover. This unexpected team-up suggests that the walls between comic universes might be thinning out more than we ever thought possible.
Lately, at Comic-Con, DC and Marvel revealed a unique cover depicting Deadpool wielding the Infinity Gauntlet filled with characters from both DC and Marvel universes.

What has James Gunn said about DC vs Marvel?
As a die-hard cinema enthusiast, I can’t help but notice that James Gunn has subtly hinted at an intriguing concept in a recent interview with Rolling Stone. During the chat, there was a vintage Superman/Spider-Man crossover comic book from the 70s on the table, and Gunn himself mentioned, “…it’s not impossible.” This suggests that he might be considering such a collaboration in the future. Exciting times ahead!
We’ve discussed this topic countless times. While the idea of its execution is plausible, what intrigues me is introducing something fresh alongside it. However, I feel the audience might have grown tired of repetition. What truly matters is presenting compelling stories featuring our beloved superheroes, and offering a diverse range of these tales. The love for superheroes is evident, but they require more diversity and superior storytelling to keep audiences engaged. Merely having Spider-Man and Superman collaborate won’t suffice if the quality isn’t up to par. For any potential project, it needs to stem from a genuine passion and not simply be a cash grab.
I chose to work on Superman because of my affection for the character, and I was eager to write that film. If I were to pen a Superman vs. Spider-Man movie, would it excite me as a potential masterpiece? Or am I doing it because audiences want to see these two superheroes together? For me, any future collaboration would have to be under the direction of someone who views it as a fantastic opportunity rather than just a money-making scheme, since I’m not interested in that.
Back in 2023, Gunn also told Empire:
He confidently expresses to Empire magazine in the latest Guardians of the Galaxy volume 3 issue that his position at DC might make a difference. However, he cautions not to anticipate any developments on that front right away. He notes that it’s still far off, saying, ‘It’s years away.’ Before we can expect anything concrete, he believes we need to set the foundation for what we’re doing at DC first. While discussions about it have taken place, they’ve been more like casual, enjoyable chats rather than serious strategic planning.
When will DC vs Marvel happen?
If a DC vs Marvel movie ever does happen, we can guess it’s years away, possibly 2030 or later.
James Gunn is currently just starting to develop his DCU.
Similarly, the Russos are currently working on two films titled “Avengers: Doomsday” and “Secret Wars“. They’ve hinted that this dual production marks the commencement of a fresh chapter in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
