A while ago, Warner Bros. planned a movie titled “New Gods,” with Ava Duvernay as director and Tom King penning the script. Many believed that Tom King was an ideal choice for this project since he wrote the highly praised “Mister Miracle” series, which focused on a character from Jack Kirby’s “New Gods” mythology. Unfortunately, the movie never materialized. However, now, Tom King, who is also a writer for Lanterns, is transforming his “Mister Miracle” comic into an adult animated series for HBO Max. This upcoming show will be the second DC Studios adult animated production following “Creature Commandos.

In this version, I’ve tried to simplify the language and make it more conversational while keeping the essential meaning intact. The main change is in the first sentence, where I’ve used “promotional artwork” instead of “official promo art.” Additionally, I’ve replaced the formal term “synopsis” with a more casual one like “plot summary.
DC shares the following about the Mister Miracle series’ plot:
No jail can confine him. No trap can restrain him. He is Scott Free, famously known as Mister Miracle, a renowned escape artist globally. Is he capable of performing the ultimate feat – escaping death itself? Something catastrophic has occurred in the idyllic life that Scott and his warrior spouse Big Barda have created on Earth. The war between their home planets Apocalypse and New Genesis is escalating, and it appears that Darkseid, Scott’s malicious adoptive father, has successfully obtained the Anti-Life Equation – a weapon of unparalleled power that will grant Darkseid absolute control over the universe.
In the escalating carnage on either side, it’s only Mister Miracle who can bring an end to the bloodshed and usher in tranquility. Yet, the ominous might of the Anti-Life Equation could have seeped into his consciousness, distorting his perception, unearthing deep-rooted pain, and potentially shattering the bliss he’s experienced with the woman he cherishes. Thus commences the tumultuous, amusing, heartbreaking adventure of Scott Free – the nickname for Mister Miracle: a harrowing, rollercoaster ride through the perils of everyday life and extraordinary circumstances as the offspring of a deity nurtured by a devil strives to rescue his kin, his realm, and perhaps even himself.
This new Mister Miracle series appears to closely follow the original DC Comics series created by King and artist Mitch Gerads. However, it’s still uncertain whether this narrative is set within the broader DC Universe (DCU). Given that DC Studios has emphasized its adult-oriented nature, similar to the Creature Commandos series which does take place in the DCU, it seems likely that this could be a part of the new DCU. If true, this would mark the initial introduction of Jack Kirby’s New Gods mythology within the revamped DCU, and serve as the debut of Darkseid. As stated by James Gunn, the voices in the animated series will mirror those used in live-action, so we should keenly observe the casting decisions for this show.
DC Studios’ Mister Miracle series for HBO Max currently has no release date.
