DC Studios Shocks Fans: Sgt. Rock Movie Canceled Despite Star-Studded Cast and Big Budget

It appears the planned movie based on the character, Sgt. Rock, which was being developed at DC Studios, has unfortunately been scrapped and will not proceed.

The movie was planned to feature Colin Farrell in the lead role, with Luca Guadagnino directing, while Justin Kuritzkes, known for writing Guadagnino’s “Challengers” and “Queer”, was responsible for the script.

Sergeant Rock was getting ready to go into production, with additional characters being cast and plans to film in England this summer. It’s been reported that Mike Faist, who played a role in Guadagnino’s “Challengers,” was in contention for a part as one of the men from Easy Company, the military unit battling Nazi forces in Europe. Additionally, it’s said that a role was being considered for a female character representing the French resistance movement.

The plot is said to follow Sgt. Rock trying to find the Holy Spear before the Nazis.

Why was Sgt. Rock canceled?

According to THR’s report, it’s unclear why the production has halted, but an insider suggests scheduling conflicts related to outdoor filming may be the cause. The source also mentioned that the project isn’t cancelled and could be revisited towards the end of this year, potentially with a summer 2026 shooting date.

An alternate report hints that the studio was hesitant about Guadagnino directing because he hadn’t worked on action films before, and even though the $70 million budget isn’t large compared to typical comic book productions, it’s speculated that this, along with other factors, may have shaken the studio’s confidence, causing the cancellation of Sgt. Rock.

Initially, Sgt. Rock wasn’t included in James Gunn and Peter Safran’s original DCU lineup, but they were so enthusiastic about it that they found room for the movie due to the impressive script by Justin Kuritzkes. Notably, Kuritzkes has previously written Guadagnino’s films, ‘Challengers’ and ‘Queer’.

Who is Sgt. Rock?

Sgt. Rock is a renowned war hero from DC Comics’ stable, brought to life by writer Robert Kanigher and artist Joe Kubert. He made his first appearance in issue #83 of ‘Our Army at War’ in 1959, eventually becoming the emblematic character of the series, which was subsequently renamed ‘Sgt. Rock‘ as a tribute to him.

Frank Rock, famously known as Sergeant Rock, leads Easy Company – a tough, experienced battalion that fought their way through the trenches during World War II. With his Thompson submachine gun, belt of grenades, and determined gaze beneath his helmet, Sergeant Rock represents determination, loyalty, and an unyielding spirit.
