DC Studios has confirmed its first project expanding the Superman universe: a series centered around the character Jimmy Olsen.
As reported by The Hollywood Reporter, the studio has hired Dan Perrault and Tony Yacenda, the creators of American Vandal, to develop a new series. They will be the writers, executive producers, and showrunners for the project.
Skyler Gisondo, known for his role as Jimmy Olsen in James Gunn’s Superman movie, will be the star of a new show. Even though he wasn’t in Superman for very long, his portrayal of Jimmy Olsen was popular with viewers.
Jimmy Olsen, a photographer at the Daily Planet, surprisingly helps save the day in the film. Adding to the drama, he has a past relationship with Eve Teschmacher, who now works for Lex Luthor.
A new series is in the works that will center on Jimmy Olsen and the reporters of the Daily Planet as they investigate crimes committed by individuals with superpowers, as reported by The Hollywood Reporter. While Lois Lane and Clark Kent will appear, they won’t be regular main characters.
The first season will reportedly feature Gorilla Grodd as the main villain. Grodd is a super-intelligent, telepathic ape who leads Gorilla City, a secret city hidden in Africa. The character originally appeared in the 1959 The Flash comic books, created by John Broome and Carmine Infantino.
James Gunn and Peter Safran will also serve as executive producers, and Galen Vaisman will manage the project for DC Studios.
Before the official announcement, people were already speculating about potential spinoffs from James Gunn’s Superman film. One, a series about Jimmy Olsen, has now been confirmed, and another focusing on the character Mr. Terrific, played by Edi Gathegi, was also in the works.
Sources suggest the upcoming Jimmy Olsen show may break away from typical superhero storylines.
The show will likely be structured as a series of standalone stories, each focusing on a different villain and case within the DC Universe. This format would allow fans to discover more obscure villains and delve into the more shadowy aspects of the DC world.
