DC Studios Co-chief James Gunn Defends Matt Reeves’s The Batman Sequel Delay; READ

As a seasoned moviegoer with years of experiencing the highs and lows of Hollywood, I can appreciate James Gunn’s perspective on the delayed release of Matt Reeves’ The Batman. Having witnessed gaps between sequels ranging from 7 to 36 years (yes, 36 years for Top Gun!), I understand that patience is indeed a virtue in this industry.

From Alien and Aliens, Incredibles, Terminators, Avatars, to the upcoming Guardians Vol 3, it’s clear that filmmakers need time to craft compelling narratives that truly resonate with audiences. I’m not saying we should be excited about another delay, but let’s remember that a well-crafted movie is worth the wait, and if Matt Reeves needs five more years for The Batman, then so be it!

Now, to lighten the mood, I can’t help but think of a joke. Here it goes: Why was the DC movie delayed? Because they needed more time to make it as great as a Marvel film! But don’t worry, I’ll stick with rooting for James Gunn and his upcoming projects like Superman starring David Corenswet, which is set to release on July 11, 2025. Can’t wait!

Many ardent superhero enthusiasts had been eagerly anticipating Matt Reeves’s The Batman, looking forward to witnessing the return of the caped crusader. Yet, the delay in its release has disheartened these fans. However, James Gunn, a co-head at DC Studios, has recently spoken out, justifying the extended wait for the movie featuring Robert Pattinson.

On social media, the director of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 shared insights about how it’s quite typical in Hollywood for movie series to have a follow-up released several years later.

“To be fair, a 5 year gap or more is fairly common in sequels,” James Gunn mentioned on Threads.

He further elaborated, “The gap between Alien and Aliens was 7 years, the same as between The Incredibles. Similarly, there were 7 years between the first two Terminators. The sequel to Avatar came out 13 years later, just like Top Gun had a 36-year break, and naturally, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2 was released 6 years before Vol 3.

In case you haven’t heard yet, Warner Bros. has postponed the release of Matt Reeves’s upcoming action-thriller superhero film from its original date to October 1, 2027. The new release date was announced on December 27, 2024.

This highly anticipated sequel, of the 2022 outing was earlier set to release on October 2, 2026.

According to a report from The Hollywood Reporter, it’s anticipated that the second installment of “The Batman” will begin production in the latter half of 2025. It’s speculated that the delay might be due to the filmmaker of “War for the Planet of the Apes” still fine-tuning the script.

According to reports, the team of James Gunn and Peter Safran is apparently lending their assistance in preparing the project. It’s important to note that this project does not belong to the DC Universe.

On Threads, The Suicide Squad director stated that a complete screenplay for The Batman hasn’t been finalized just yet. He emphasized that Matt Reeves is putting in a lot of effort to ensure the movie turns out fantastic.

In a forthcoming project for the DC Universe, James Gunn’s upcoming work can be expected in the Superman film, featuring actor David Corenswet, with its premiere scheduled on July 11, 2025.
