Following some recent news, it’s been revealed that Clayface, Batman’s first solo project villain in James Gunn’s DCU, now has a director assigned for the upcoming film. According to The Hollywood Reporter, horror director James Watkins (known for “Speak No Evil”) will be leading the project. What makes this particularly exciting is that the script is penned by horror maestro Mike Flanagan, famous for works such as “Midnight Mass,” “The Haunting of Hill House,” and “Doctor Sleep.
As per the initial article, the film boasts a mid-range budget of approximately $40 million, which is typically seen in studio horror films rather than superhero movies. The story revolves around a struggling actor in Hollywood who uses an unusual serum to maintain his relevance. Unbeknownst to him, he gains the ability to mold his physical form like clay, mirroring the character’s appearance in Batman: The Animated Series. For added intrigue, there’s a hint of the mysterious ‘Substance’ involved. It remains unclear if they’ll utilize the original Clayface, Basil Karlo, or his alter ego, Matt Hagen. Batman has encountered various villains known as Clayface throughout his career.
Speaking about the lore within the DC Universe, a character resembling Clayface has made an appearance in established stories. He was depicted as an antagonist in the animated “Creature Commandos” series. Despite being shown to perish in battle, James Gunn hinted that Clayface’s demise may not have been as final as it seemed. This could suggest that the same character from “Creature Commandos” might return or that there are multiple versions of Clayface, similar to his comic book counterpart. The upcoming movie “Clayface,” scheduled for release on September 11, 2026 by DC Studios, will provide answers regarding these characters and their connections.
