DC Revealed New ‘Absolute Batman’ Logo & Some Fans Think It’s So Bad, They Petitioned James Gunn to Change It

As a long-time DC Comics enthusiast who has followed Batman’s adventures since the days of Adam West’s television series, I must admit that the new Absolute Universe and its associated designs have left me with mixed emotions. On one hand, I am thrilled at the prospect of fresh takes on iconic characters like Superman and Wonder Woman. The idea of a coexisting universe where creators can explore different aspects of these heroes is truly intriguing. However, when it comes to the new Batman logo and design, I find myself in agreement with the majority of fans – it’s a bit of a brick wall!

Approximately a month ago, in a video on YouTube by DC, writers Joshua Williamson and Scott Snyder revealed their fresh comic series titled “Absolute Universe“. Unlike The New 52, this project is intended to run alongside the current DC universe instead of overwriting or altering it through retcon.

“All In aims to extend an invitation to everyone, be it established creators or fresh talents, to share their finest narratives. The objective is to establish a starting point that will serve as the best entry for quite some time.”

In a fresh, alternate take on the DC Universe, masterminded by Darkseid, renowned writers and artists are given the opportunity to rework beloved characters such as Batman, Superman, and Wonder Woman from their roots. This universe coexists with the primary DC narrative as part of an expansive, ongoing storyline. The term “Absolute” represents the superior quality found in these special DC editions. Scott Snyder is set to pen Absolute Batman, collaborating with artist Nick Dragotta, who describes this world as more chaotic and threatening, necessitating heroes that are stronger and more adaptable.

As a hardcore gamer, I’ve got to say that I’m pretty stoked about the latest unveiling of logos, character designs, and alternate cover art for our favorite comics. Most of it’s been met with a warm welcome, but there’s this new Batman logo and design that’s left quite a few fans, including myself, feeling underwhelmed, even disappointed. It’s a bit of a letdown, to be honest.

The new logo features a design resembling a black brick with bat-like wingtips, ears, and a tail.

In this new take on Batman, you’ll notice a significant departure from the norm, largely because of his altered origin story. Unlike previous versions, this Dark Knight won’t have inherited wealth, a mansion, or a butler. The inaugural issue, beautifully colored by Frank Martin and expertly lettered by Clayton Cowles, promises to showcase what sets this ‘Absolute’ Batman apart from the rest.

While the concept of a reversed origin sounds intriguing, the design has received mixed reviews. The new Batman logo is bulky and confusing, with many fans joking that it resembles a brick and has been widely criticized. Discussions about the logo have been active online, particularly on Reddit and X, where the response has been overwhelmingly negative.

That’s an absolute garbage. How does it even suppose to be a bat? It is a brick!

Sucks. Looks like they just redrew an AI generated image by hand.

100% despicable. Whoever approved it needs to be fired asap!

As a gaming enthusiast, I can’t wait to dive into the world of Absolute DC! The creative teams are top-notch, so I’m expecting great things from each book. But let me tell you, I’m scratching my head over this new Batman symbol. I mean, how did that get past the first draft? It seems like an oversight that needs addressing!

Supporters went to great lengths by creating a petition for James Gunn to alter the logo, but he made it clear that he doesn’t have the power to do so, despite acknowledging the issues and taking their feedback into consideration.

“Regarding your request to alter the logo to ‘Absolute Batman’, I don’t actually have the authority to make changes in the comic books.”

However, it’s not all negative—Absolute Superman and Absolute Wonder Woman designs have received considerable praise.
