Now that Donald Trump is supporting the purchase of Warner Bros. Discovery by Paramount, the recent focus on progressive themes in DC Comics may be coming to an end.
For years, many DC fans have felt the company’s movies focused too much on social issues. A potential deal with Skydance might shift the focus back to the core comic book stories.
James Gunn is stepping down as head of DC Studios, and this change is likely to affect DC Comics as well.
Woke DC: Gay Superman and Declining Sales
DC Comics introduced a new Superman – Jon Kent, the son of Clark Kent – and announced that he identifies as both gay and bisexual in the comic book *Superman: Son of Kal-El*. While the change generated widespread news coverage, the reaction wasn’t quite what DC expected.
Readers felt the publisher prioritized sensationalism over quality storytelling. As a result, the title’s sales dropped, and it was discontinued after only 18 issues.
DC Comics’ increasing focus on stories centered around identity – including changing the race or gender of established characters and incorporating social justice themes – caused some longtime fans to lose interest.
Critics said DC had turned away from its roots, replacing timeless heroism with divisive politics.
Gretchen Felker-Martin Comic Canceled by WB Brass
Last September, DC Comics cancelled the *Red Hood* series, written by Gretchen Felker-Martin, a transgender author, after she publicly celebrated the death of Charlie Kirk.
The series was pulled just one day after its debut, with DC issuing credits to retailers.
Although official explanations mentioned feedback from the public that didn’t align with DC’s ethical guidelines, The Hollywood Reporter revealed the decision actually originated with Warner Bros. leadership, not DC Comics’ creative team.
This difference is important. It suggests that Warner Bros. executives, rather than DC Comics, made the decision to stop the project, potentially indicating a shift in strategy from the company’s leadership.
Trump Watching Ellison’s Moves at CBS
Donald Trump is already keeping an eye on changes under the Ellisons’ control.
Via Deadline:
Late Sunday, while speaking with reporters aboard Air Force One, Trump questioned who would be CBS’s lead anchor. He then stated, with some disbelief, “Not Norah O’Donnell. I don’t believe that’s happening.”
Trump also praised Larry and David Ellison, calling them friends and strong supporters. He expressed confidence they would help CBS, which he referred to as the “Tiffany Network,” reach its full potential.
Donald Trump’s remarks came after Skydance merged with Paramount and CBS. As part of this change, David Ellison appointed Bari Weiss, the founder of *The Free Press* and a well-known critic of progressive viewpoints, as the new Editor-in-Chief of CBS News.
This clearly indicates the direction things are heading: a significant shift to remove political influence from corporate media, starting with Ellison’s leadership. Hopefully, DC Comics will follow suit.
A Return to “Truth, Justice, and the American Way”
If Paramount and Skydance successfully buy Warner Bros. Discovery, we anticipate the Ellisons will remove what they consider to be overly progressive elements from DC Comics, and restore the traditional motto of “Truth, Justice, and the American Way” for Superman.
When Gunn took over, the focus shifted from a traditionally “American” approach to one centered on humanity. He also faced criticism for his commentary on DC content, where he controversially compared supporters of Jesus to Nazis and suggested a Nazi-led world wouldn’t be significantly different from our own.
What it could mean for DC
If the Paramount WBD merger happens, here’s what that could mean for DC:
- End of progressive storylines that alienate readers.
- Focus on classic heroism and moral storytelling.
- Stricter oversight from studio leadership.
- New creators chosen for storytelling, not social messaging (is Mark Waid going to work for the Trump-backed Ellisons? Same with Gunn, and every other woke-creator at DC???).
- Rebranding of DC’s image to restore trust among longtime fans.
In short, Trump’s allies are poised to make DC Comics great again — literally.
The decision to cancel *Red Hood* might have been an early warning. Now, the deal with Paramount could confirm a larger shift is happening.
As Trump himself said, “Larry Ellison and David Ellison will do the right thing.”
This could signal the end of DC’s recent focus on social issues and a return to more traditional superhero themes, like Superman’s commitment to “Truth, Justice, and the American Way.”
