Long-standing fans of DC Comics are well aware of the intricate complexity in their narrative continuity. To put it simply, it’s quite convoluted. Unlike Marvel Comics, which has maintained a relatively straightforward continuity since its beginning, DC has experienced numerous reboots over the years. Even die-hard DC fans find it challenging to differentiate between what is considered canon these days. As DC Comics celebrates its 90th anniversary, the publisher unveils The New History of the DC Universe. This limited series, consisting of four issues, will be penned by renowned industry figure Mark Waid (Kingdom Come) and illustrated by a variety of artists. The series is set to debut this summer. Waid shares his thoughts on this extensive project:
“The New History of the DC Universe” aims to provide clarity and cohesion to the rich tapestry of stories that make up the DC Comics universe, with the narrative unfolding through the perspective of Barry Allen, the Silver Age Flash.
As a movie reviewer diving headfirst into the world of comic book adaptations, I can confidently say that this project is my ultimate dream come true. It’s not just another addition to the DC universe; it’s an opportunity to weave all the intricate threads of its sprawling continuity into one harmonious master timeline.
Moreover, I couldn’t be more excited to collaborate with some of the finest artists in the comic book industry, whose combined talents will undoubtedly make this series a visual spectacle that shines brighter than the stars. For longtime fans, there are fresh nuggets of information to discover, while Easter eggs galore promise a delightful treasure hunt for even the most ardent DC enthusiasts.
In essence, this series is poised to become an indispensable read for any true fan of DC Comics, offering a rich tapestry of storytelling that promises to captivate and enthrall in equal measure.
For the inaugural edition, we have artists such as Todd Nauck (known for his work on ‘Young Justice’) and Jerry Ordway, who was part of the original ‘Crisis on Infinite Earths’ forty years ago. The primary cover is designed by Chris Samnee, with additional variants from Dan Mora, Ryan Sook, Stanley “Artgerm” Lau, and Mike Cho. Scott Koblish will create a series of connecting wraparound variant covers for the series, showcasing DC’s timeless characters in chronological order across each issue. You can find some of these variant covers in our gallery below.

For decades, DC Comics continuity has been a complex web of interconnected stories. In 1985, they began untangling this web with the mini-series “Crisis on Infinite Earths.” After the end of “Crisis,” Marv Wolfman and George Perez teamed up again to create “The History of the DC Universe,” a two-issue guide to their revised timeline. This is why they called this new series “The New History of the DC Universe.” However, there were inconsistencies in this new continuity, which were later addressed by mini-series like “Zero Hour” in 1994 and “Infinite Crisis” in 2005. Then came the “Flashpoint” reboot that led to the New 52 in 2011, adding even more layers of complexity.
As a dedicated admirer, I can confidently say that Mark Waid isn’t just a comic book writer; he’s also a scholar in the world of comics. Given this expertise, there’s no one more suited to undertake this project. In the past, Waid delved into the rich history of the Marvel Universe with his 6-part History of the Marvel Universe, but tackling the same task for the DC Universe might prove a greater challenge. Yet, this is exactly what DC fans have been eagerly anticipating for quite some time now. The first installment of The New History of the DC Universe will grace comic book stores on June 25, 2025.
