DC Comics is preparing to debut “Batman/Static: Beyond,” a six-issue limited series under its DC Elseworlds imprint. This exciting crossover pairs Terry McGinnis and Virgil Hawkins in a future setting. The series, penned by Evan Narcisse with art by Nikolas Draper-Ivey, is scheduled to start on November 12, 2025.

Story Premise

In the city of Neo-Gotham, Terry McGinnis carries on as Batman Beyond while Virgil Hawkins initiates the Q-Wave Energy Grid, a groundbreaking energy system for Earth. As preparations are underway for Earth’s entrance into the Cooperative, an interstellar alliance, the Justice League Beyond stands ready to oversee the transition process.

In a chilling turn of events, an enigmatic antagonist instigates a worldwide power outage, rendering technology useless and jeopardizing the planet’s position within the alliance. Now compelled to collaborate, Batman and Static find themselves in a world devoid of the very technology that once defined it.

Narcisse pointed out that the appeal lies in examining the distinct backgrounds that have molded Terry and Virgil individually.

Evan Narcisse shared that he appreciated the intriguing relationship between Nik, Static, and Batman in the ‘Milestone 30th Anniversary Special’, where these characters joined forces for the first time. What’s particularly thrilling about this new project for him is delving into the distinct differences between Terry and Virgil.

In simpler terms, Draper-Ivey noted that the story raises worries about excess reliance on technology and the potential consequences should it vanish abruptly.

Nikolas Draper-Ivey expressed concern about our growing reliance on technology and the potential risks that come with it. He noted how we often use our watches to locate our phones, or our phones to connect to various things, rather than relying on our own memories. This dependence on technology for remembering concerns him. He fears that if all these technologies were suddenly taken away from us in an instant, humanity might find itself at a significant disadvantage due to our overreliance on them.

Narcisse pointed out that Static has matured into a seasoned hero bearing significant duties, whereas Terry is juggling his high school life with the role of Batman. The differing methods they employ serve as the core theme of the storyline.

According to Narcisse, Static, once a teen hero, has grown into a mature figure taking on greater responsibilities for his city and beyond. On the other hand, Terry is still navigating his way through high school, shouldering the burden of the Batman identity and its accompanying expectations. Compared to Virgil, a seasoned member of the Justice League, who was shaped by systemic injustice in Dakota during his adolescence, their methods for creating a safer, more just world differ significantly. The creative team aims to explore whether they can learn to collaborate effectively amidst a disrupted reality in the comic Batman/Static: Beyond, as their deep feelings confront each other against the backdrop of an unpredictable future.
