In 2026, DC Comics will celebrate the 40th anniversary of Frank Miller and Klaus Janson’s influential graphic novel, The Dark Knight Returns, with a year-long event for fans. Colorist Lynn Varley also contributed to the series.
DC Comics is celebrating with new printed comics, special tribute covers, events with the creators, exclusive merchandise releases, and a special hardcover book launching on Batman Day.
DC marks 40 years of The Dark Knight Returns
DC Comics states that The Dark Knight Returns continues to be a popular and influential Batman story. It’s considered a key work that has greatly impacted how Bruce Wayne and Gotham City are portrayed in recent years.
The four-part comic series debuted in March 1986 and features Bruce Wayne coming out of retirement to become Batman again.
Anniversary kickoff at ComicsPro with Miller and Janson
The celebration starts in February at ComicsPro in Glendale, California.
Frank Miller and Klaus Janson will discuss the lasting influence of their comic book, The Dark Knight Returns, in a panel hosted by DC. ComicsPro members can join the discussion either in person or by watching online. The panel is set for Friday at 4:30pm.
Monthly facsimile editions reprint the original 1986 issues
Beginning in February, DC will publish monthly Facsimile Editions of The Dark Knight Returns #1–4.
These reprints are designed to be exactly like the original comics from 1986, with all the original covers, advertisements, and extra content included, for readers who prefer that classic format.
40th Anniversary variant covers arrive later this summer
Later this summer, DC will roll out The Dark Knight Returns 40th Anniversary variant covers.
So, DC’s doing these special variant covers, and honestly, it’s a really cool idea. They’re getting a bunch of different artists to put their own spin on the look of The Dark Knight Returns, you know, really honoring Frank Miller’s iconic art style and just how much that series changed Batman comics forever. It’s basically a big artist tribute to a legendary work.
DC Compact Comics Edition hits April 7, 2026
DC will also publish Batman: The Dark Knight Returns: DC Compact Comics Edition on April 7, 2026.
DC Comics describes its Compact Comics line as a convenient, smaller size for enjoying classic stories, available at bookstores and other retailers.
DC Shop launches Artist Collection with The Dark Knight Returns
DC Shop is starting a new “Artist Collection” with items inspired by The Dark Knight Returns. The first release will feature a jacket, limited-edition art prints created with Sideshow Collectibles, t-shirts, a hoodie, and a duffel bag.
DC also notes fans can sign up on DC Shop for notifications about the 40th Anniversary collection.
Batman Day 2026 ends the anniversary year with a deluxe hardcover
DC plans to wrap up its celebration on Batman Day 2026 with the release of a deluxe hardcover edition of Batman: The Dark Knight Returns.
DC calls this a beautifully restored, high-quality collection – the ultimate version of the story.
Why The Dark Knight Returns still matters
DC highlights the series’ portrayal of an aging Bruce Wayne, its unique vision of Gotham City, and its lasting impact on both comic books and popular culture.
The story featured a new Robin named Carrie Kelley and took place in the near future, pitting Batman against some of his most dangerous foes.
