Dax Shepard recently shared a story about a terrifying car accident he experienced in high school, an event that deeply impacted his outlook on life. While talking to Kaley Cuoco on his podcast, Armchair Expert, the 51-year-old actor described the accident and the moment he thought his life was ending. He said the feeling of facing death was unlike anything he’d ever felt, and he believed he was just moments away from dying.
The incident happened late at night as Shepard and a friend were driving from Toledo to Detroit. Shepard decided to rest in the back seat to get ready for an early work shift, so his friend was driving. He remembers drifting off to sleep with the sound of the road, then being suddenly woken up by gravel hitting the car. When he looked up, he saw his friend completely slumped over the wheel while the car was going 85 miles per hour.
The car started to skid sideways toward the trees along the Michigan highway, and Shepard briefly tried to grab the steering wheel. But he quickly realized it was hopeless and decided to lie back down as the car flew into the air.
As the car started tumbling down the highway, Shepard surprisingly went from being terrified to feeling calm. He realized that accepting his possible death was, strangely, comforting – almost as if his brain released something to help him cope with the shock.
He explained that he quickly went from desperately trying to figure out what would happen in the crash to a bizarre sense of acceptance. Remarkably, the car flipped ten times without hitting any trees.
Shepard and his friend were able to climb out of the wrecked car without any injuries. However, the experience deeply affected him mentally, and for days afterward he wondered if he had actually died. He felt very strange for the next three days, constantly questioning whether he was still alive or if he was in some kind of afterlife.
Dax Shepard is a leading voice in the world of digital media, thanks to the continued success of his podcast, Armchair Expert. This year, the show received a Golden Globe nomination for Best Podcast, recognizing the honest and open conversations he and co-host Monica Padman have with their guests.
Beyond his work as a musician, Dax Shepard is well-known for his enduring marriage to actress Kristen Bell. The couple frequently collaborate on projects together, such as their game show, Family Game Fight!
