Following a series of underperforming films at the box office, such as “The Flash,” “Aquaman: The Lost Kingdom,” “Shazam: Wrath of the Gods,” and “Blue Beetle,” Zaslav appointed James Gunn and Peter Safran to helm DC Studios in 2022. Their collaboration resulted in a daring 10-year blueprint for interconnected movies and spin-offs.
Forthcoming ventures feature “Supergirl” and “Clayface” slated for 2026, along with a fresh “Wonder Woman” film under development.
During the movie’s debut weekend, Zaslav discussed the triumph of “Superman” and the fresh approach. He mentioned, “Three years ago, I appointed James Gunn and Peter Safran to rejuvenate and consolidate the creative vision of DC under a single management team. Their task was to infuse new energy and enthusiasm into one of the most renowned storytelling franchises globally.
Apart from that, he highly commended James and Peter, expressing his admiration for their dedication to preserving the rich history of the DC Universe while simultaneously creating something fresh and captivating, which he found truly inspiring.
As a passionate cinephile, I’ve long been on the hunt for a visionary like Kevin Feige of Marvel Studios, who could breathe new life into the ailing DC Studios. The moment I met James Gunn, renowned for his work on the “Guardians of the Galaxy” trilogy, I sensed his deep-rooted affection for DC characters. When he spoke about them with such warmth and familiarity, it struck me that he was the ideal candidate to helm the first film in this rejuvenated universe.
Despite a promising start for “Superman”, it must continue to perform well at the box office to be regarded as an unquestionable success due to its substantial production cost of $225 million. Zaslav remains hopeful, observing the fluctuating fortunes of other comic book films, such as Marvel’s “Thunderbolts,” which have experienced their fair share of highs and lows. The last standalone Superman film, 2013’s “Man of Steel”, began with a bang but failed to sustain long-term enthusiasm.

He further disclosed that in the following year, DC Studios will debut two movies, ‘Supergirl’ and ‘Clayface’, in cinemas and a series titled ‘Lanterns’ on HBO Max.
