At Anime Expo 2025, enthusiasts received thrilling updates when the follow-up to the hit anime Cyberpunk: Edgerunners was formally declared. The debut poster for the upcoming series was unveiled, and some recognizable characters made an appearance at the event, including voice actors Emi Lo, who portrays Lucy, and Zach Aguilar, the voice behind David Martinez.

As Bartosz Sztybor, the creator behind the series, I had the pleasure of being present as well. To my delight, director Hiroyuki Imaishi unexpectedly joined us too, adding a touch of excitement to the event.

Sztybor shared that a sequel was produced due to the numerous untold stories in Night City. He expressed his belief that the initial anime’s narrative shouldn’t have been the end, as there are plenty of engaging characters and narratives yet unexplored. In addition, he playfully remarked, “I wasn’t content with the melancholy… so now I want you to experience even more sadness.

Currently, Netflix has unveiled a brief trailer hinting at the fact that the character David is no longer alive, yet the narratives will persist.

In a fresh development, Cyberpunk: Edgerunners 2 promises to be another gripping 10-episode journey set within the universe of Cyberpunk 2077. This upcoming season is being billed as a gritty tale of redemption and retribution. Kai Ikarashi, who masterfully directed the sixth episode titled “Girl on Fire” in the previous series, will be at the helm for this new chapter. The narrative poses an intriguing question: “In a world dazzled by spectacle, how far are you willing to push boundaries to ensure your story is heard?

CD Projekt Red is the creator of the Cyberpunk 2077 video game and the Cyberpunk: Edgerunners anime, which was produced by animation studio TRIGGER. Rafał Jaki serves as showrunner and executive producer for this series. Additionally, a prequel manga focusing on characters Rebecca and Pilar has been released within the franchise.

In September 2022, Cyberpunk: Edgerunners made its debut with ten captivating episodes. This groundbreaking anime quickly gained popularity among fans and received accolades for both Best New Anime and Best Original Anime. Now streaming on Netflix, the series chronicles a street kid’s struggle to make it in the futuristic metropolis of Night City. To survive, he chooses the dangerous path of an edgerunner – essentially, a cyberpunk-style mercenary.
