David Fincher Reveals Why He Couldn’t Do Disney’s 20,000 Leagues Under The Sea Remake Even Though He ‘Really Wanted’ To

As a die-hard admirer, let me tell you: David Fincher‘s cinematic masterpieces like Fight Club and The Social Network have left me absolutely spellbound! His work has consistently amazed audiences. Yet, it’s fascinating to know that he was once involved in a Disney project that unfortunately never saw the light of day.

The subject at hand is actually a modern retelling of Jules Verne’s classic novel, “Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea.” As expressed to Letterboxd, the director articulated his enthusiasm by saying: “I was eager to bring Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea to life because our vision involved elements that were both gritty and fascinating, filled with underwater mystery and steampunk aesthetics.

As stated by Comicbook, citing Fincher’s account, Disney instructed the director: “It is essential for us to identify areas where we can maximize our potential, and you’ll need to comply with certain requirements in order to do so.

In conversation with the media, filmmaker David Fincher elaborated on Jules Verne’s narrative, stating it revolves around an Indian prince grappling with white colonialism. While Fincher held a comparable perspective for his project, Disney expressed agreement but with a caveat: “Sure, sure, we’re okay with that, as long as there’s significantly less of that element in the final product.

It quickly emerged that the studio wasn’t keen on funding the director’s concept, leading him to depart from the project. Later, he took up the task of directing the movie “Gone Girl” featuring Ben Affleck.

The project in question was first announced at the 2010 San Diego Comic-Con.
