Among the numerous actors who have portrayed Superman on-screen, only a select few truly capture the essence of the character, and Christopher Reeve was undoubtedly one of those. Now, David Corenswet finds himself in this esteemed company, as he has portrayed Superman more convincingly than many others in recent years. Known for his roles in films like “Pearl,” Corenswet won the part after auditioning alongside 400 other hopefuls for James Gunn. Recently, it was revealed that Corenswet’s audition tape has surfaced, providing a clear explanation as to why he was chosen over the competition. And while his initial statement included the fact that he stands at 6’4″, we suspect this height advantage didn’t hurt his chances either.

As a film enthusiast, I’ve stumbled upon an audition clip that feels like it was plucked straight from an early version of Lois Lane’s interview scene in a movie. However, this iteration is set in the fictional DC Comics country, Bialya, instead of Metropolis or Smallville. Out of over 400 hopefuls, James Gunn, the director, has confided that this Juilliard-trained actor was his top pick almost immediately. Interestingly enough, Christopher Reeve, the original Superman, was also a graduate of the same prestigious acting school, hinting at some sort of destiny perhaps. In an interview with GQ, Gunn shared that “From the very beginning, he was the one to beat.” Watching this audition, it’s easy to understand why. When an actor can convincingly transform from Clark Kent, the mild-mannered man, into Superman with just a single, powerful octave change in a word? That’s half of the role right there.
In a different casting, Gunn stated that the chemistry between Corenswet and Lois was crucial, even though he wasn’t reading with Rachel Brosnahan. He explained to Entertainment Weekly, “We paired various actors and actresses together to discover not only who portrayed Clark and Lois best, but also who had the strongest ‘Clois’, or chemistry as a pair. I believe David was the ideal Clark, Rachel was the perfect Lois – yet they also had an exceptional connection.” The audition tape clearly showcases how well Corenswet understands what has made the character compelling for 87 years. We’re excited to see him soaring over Metropolis again and rescuing more squirrels!
