After their CinemaCon demonstration featuring fresh clips, the cast of the approaching Superman film, along with James Gunn, had an interview with Fandango about the project.
David Corenswet, Rachel Brosnahan, Nicholas Hoult, and Gunn clarified the distinct traits that set their respective characters apart.
In a playful banter, I kicked off the conversation by teasing that my character Lex can’t stand anything. To which, Corenswet humorously responded, “Well, this movie certainly could use a dash more cynicism!
Krypto / Superman relationship
It’s shown that Superman and Krypto’s friendship isn’t your typical “man’s best friend” type, as Krypto can sometimes be quite troublesome.
Corenswet said:
It’s common knowledge that many people adore dogs, but in an unusual twist, James describes Krypto as the world’s worst dog, endowed with superpowers. This canine is constantly causing chaos at the Fortress of Solitude, hunting wildlife, and getting into all sorts of trouble. Despite a deep bond between Superman and Krypto, managing this relationship is more hassle than it’s worth due to Krypto’s unruly behavior.
Superman / Lois relationship
In the movie, it’s shown that Superman and Lois aren’t already in a committed relationship; instead, they’re just beginning to date at the time the story unfolds. Although Clark appears smitten with Lois, she doesn’t seem fully convinced about Clark yet. The two have contrasting perspectives, as Lois tends to be more pragmatic, while Superman is optimistic and believes in the inherent goodness of people.
Gunn said:
He values the preservation of life above all else, refusing to let anyone die under any circumstances. This makes him a utilitarian, as he prioritizes doing the greatest good for the most people, even if it’s not always clear-cut. In contrast, she questions whether this approach is always effective and beneficial in practice.
Lex believes the end justify the means
Additionally, it’s made clear that Lex’s perspective stems from a scientific viewpoint that the end result justifies any means taken, a stance that stands in sharp opposition to Superman’s moral compass.
Gunn said:
Lex has an unwavering commitment to scientific exploration, similar to Superman’s devotion to life itself. He’d sacrifice anything for a chance to discover something new in science. Even if it means letting people perish or witnessing catastrophic events, he prioritizes scientific advancement above all else. Should the pursuit of knowledge lead to the potential destruction of the planet, he would bear no remorse.
