The galaxy is about to get a new leader.
According to a report in Puck News, Disney is expected to announce that Dave Filoni, a key creative force behind Star Wars, will become the head of Lucasfilm, replacing Kathleen Kennedy who is stepping down as president.
Disney is expected to officially announce within the next couple of weeks that Kathleen Kennedy is leaving her position as president of Lucasfilm. Dave Filoni, who is currently in charge of creative efforts for Star Wars, will take over as president.
Dave Filoni will lead the creative direction for all things Star Wars – including movies, TV shows, and more. Lynwen Brennan will manage the business operations, allowing Filoni to focus on the creative side.
Dave Filoni is widely considered the heir to Kathleen Kennedy and currently leads creative efforts at Lucasfilm. He’s best known for creating or overseeing popular Star Wars series like The Clone Wars, Rebels, The Mandalorian, and Ahsoka.
Many fans believe he brought back the original feeling of Star Wars as George Lucas intended. His promotion was widely anticipated, particularly after some recent creative decisions under the previous leader proved unsuccessful.
Although Dave Filoni doesn’t have a typical executive background, Disney is teaming him up with Kathleen Brennan, who currently manages the business side of Lucasfilm, to ensure a good balance between creative vision and day-to-day operations.
Kathleen Kennedy Stepping Down
It’s a bit sad to see Kathleen Kennedy stepping down after running Lucasfilm for over ten years. It was a real rollercoaster of a time for Star Wars fans like me – we got the amazing high of The Force Awakens, but then things got pretty bumpy with the sequels, and it felt like a lot of promising ideas just never made it to the screen.
I’m hearing that her publicist is already planning a big farewell media blitz, but honestly, from what I understand, it’s going to be all about image control rather than actually revealing anything new. It sounds like they’re prioritizing a polished presentation over genuine information.
The changes with Kennedy leaving and Filoni taking over represent a significant shift in leadership for Star Wars. As Disney tries to regain fan trust after some disappointing movies and a slowdown in streaming popularity, putting Filoni in charge of creative decisions might mean a focus on the core elements that made Star Wars great – and a return to higher quality storytelling.
