On the Saturday Night Live stage on January 18, Dave Chappelle had a surprising encounter with Bowen Yang – this being his fourth time as the show’s host.
At the conclusion of the program, Yang and Chappelle shared a warm embrace, effectively resolving their previously tense dynamic with brief farewells. This was following an unusually tense exchange on the show in 2024, which sparked widespread discussion online about a perceived disagreement between the Saturday Night Live cast member and the comedian, who has faced criticism for transphobic comments.
During the show’s finale, Chappelle was accompanied by his co-stars and the evening’s musical act, GloRilla. However, it’s worth noting that neither Chappelle nor Yang featured in any skits during the entire episode.
After an embarrassing situation in January 2024, a situation where Dakota Johnson’s show unexpectedly had Chappelle as a guest, images and footage from that evening showed Yang standing aloof at the back of the stage with his arms folded. This sparked discussions about potential disagreements between them.
Later on, Variety was informed by Yang that the separation wasn’t deliberate and wasn’t related to Chappelle’s visual aspect. He clarified that, during that period, there was a mix-up within the team that resulted in this predicament.
Yang clarified, “My position remains unchanged. The ‘distance’ wasn’t something others created physically. It stemmed from numerous internal factors within me.
Chappelle is often seen as divisive due to some contentious comments made in his 2021 Netflix special titled The Closer, which led to criticism from the LGBTQ+ community. However, Yang clarified, “The focus of the show was on other people’s reactions. I myself was simply puzzled by it all.
In this weekend’s show, Chappelle spoke for seventeen minutes, admitting that he has reservations about hosting again because of his previous history of causing controversy. However, despite asking for a fresh start, he still managed to deliver sharp wit on topics like the Los Angeles wildfires and joked about Sean “Diddy” Combs.
Next week, the 50th season of Saturday Night Live will make its comeback, featuring Timothée Chalamet in a dual role: both host and musical performer, having been cast as the star of A Complete Unknown.
