Data Centers & The Illusion of Progress

The current frenzy surrounding artificial intelligence investment is… predictable. Not in its scale – the sheer volume of capital allocated to constructing these digital fortresses is, admittedly, novel – but in its underlying naiveté. Investors, it seems, are perpetually susceptible to the allure of the ‘next big thing,’ blissfully unaware that most ‘big things’ resolve into elaborate exercises in futility. The construction continues, of course, a relentless expansion of infrastructure for a potential benefit that remains stubbornly theoretical. One waits, not for returns, but for the inevitable reckoning. It is a waiting game, and one suspects the rules are subject to change without notice.

Two entities, CoreWeave (CRWV 2.67%) and Nebius (NBIS 6.61%), are currently engaged in a peculiar race. They build, ostensibly to serve the insatiable appetite of these AI ‘hyperscalers,’ but one wonders if they are not simply constructing monuments to their own ambition, elaborate sandcastles awaiting the tide. Both offer the promise of computational power, a commodity increasingly divorced from any discernible purpose. The distinction between them, if it exists, is likely lost in a labyrinth of contracts and projections.

CoreWeave’s reliance on a single, unnamed customer – widely assumed to be Microsoft – is… concerning, yet strangely comforting. It is a precarious dependency, to be sure, but it mirrors the human condition itself: a life tethered to external forces, vulnerable to the whims of a larger entity. The fact that this entity is a multinational corporation only adds to the absurdity. The charts, of course, depict upward trajectories, but one must ask: upward towards what? A higher level of abstraction? A more efficient means of generating data for its own sake?

Nebius, too, enjoys the patronage of giants – Microsoft and Meta Platforms among them. The arrangement is mutually beneficial, or so it appears. But beneath the veneer of collaboration lies a subtle power dynamic, a silent negotiation of terms and conditions that will ultimately determine the fate of both parties. The projected growth rates – 532% and 181% for Nebius, 142% and 85% for CoreWeave – are, frankly, preposterous. Such exponential growth is unsustainable, a mathematical impossibility masquerading as financial forecasting. It’s as if the analysts have collectively decided to abandon reason and embrace fantasy.

Neither company, predictably, has yet to achieve profitability. They are engaged in a prolonged period of investment, sacrificing current returns for the promise of future gains. This is a common strategy, of course, but it feels particularly hollow in this context. It’s as if they are building a machine that will only begin to function after they are gone. The price-to-sales ratio offers a fleeting glimpse of relative value, but such metrics are ultimately meaningless. They are simply rearranging numbers on a spreadsheet, attempting to impose order on a fundamentally chaotic system.

CoreWeave, being marginally less expensive, appears to offer a slightly better value proposition. But this is a distinction without a difference. Both companies are equally vulnerable to the vagaries of the market, equally dependent on the continued patronage of their corporate overlords. The operating margin, while ostensibly a measure of efficiency, is merely a reflection of their collective delusion. CoreWeave’s proximity to breaking even is not a sign of progress, but a symptom of their shared descent into madness.

The relationship with Nvidia, its primary supplier, offers a fleeting sense of security. But even this is illusory. Supply chains are fragile, and dependencies are dangerous. A disruption in the flow of GPUs could bring the entire operation to a standstill. One can invest in both companies, of course. One can participate in the illusion. But one should not mistake activity for progress, or hope for certainty. The AI build-out will undoubtedly produce ‘winners,’ but they will be winners in a game that no one truly understands, and whose ultimate purpose remains stubbornly opaque. It is a race to nowhere, meticulously documented and endlessly analyzed, but ultimately… futile.
