Many comic book fans point to 1986 as a landmark year, thanks to groundbreaking series like Watchmen and The Dark Knight Returns. However, 1986 also saw the birth of Dark Horse Comics, founded by Oregon comic shop owner Mike Richardson, and it quickly became a leading independent publisher. Now, The Hollywood Reporter reports that Richardson has been removed from his position as CEO and publisher by Embracer, the video game company that acquired Dark Horse in 2022. Embracer has appointed gaming industry veteran Jay Komas as interim CEO and released the following statement regarding the change in leadership at Dark Horse Comics:
We’re making changes at Dark Horse to help it grow and work more closely with other parts of our company. This will allow us to improve how we create and deliver comics, games, movies, and merchandise. Ultimately, we want to set Dark Horse up for long-term success and continue providing excellent service to creators, partners, and fans.
Embracer Group acknowledged Mike Richardson’s significant impact on Dark Horse Comics and the entertainment world. They stated that his dedication, vision, and leadership were crucial to building the company Dark Horse is today, and they are thankful for the strong foundation he created for creators, stories, and fans. Richardson, age 75, has not yet commented on his departure.

Under Mike Richardson’s leadership, Dark Horse Comics published many now-famous series, including Hellboy, The Mask, Sin City, 300, and The Umbrella Academy – all of which later became successful movies or TV shows. Early on, Dark Horse also thrived with popular licensed properties like Aliens vs. Predator and Star Wars. The Aliens vs. Predator comics, in particular, directly inspired the AvP films. For almost 25 years, Dark Horse continued the Star Wars story through popular comics like Dark Empire. However, when Disney acquired Lucasfilm and Fox, they moved all those licensed comics over to Marvel.
It’s unclear what the future holds for Dark Horse Comics. They still own the rights to popular titles like Tomb Raider, Avatar, Cyberpunk, and Castlevania, among others. A big part of Mike Richardson’s legacy was supporting original creator-owned comics, which the new owners may not prioritize. He also recognized the potential of bringing manga to a North American audience – he was ahead of the curve on that. We hope Dark Horse doesn’t simply become a company focused solely on managing existing properties, but only time will reveal what happens next.
