After leading the company he started for around forty years, Mike Richardson is stepping down as CEO of Dark Horse Entertainment.
This change is a result of Embracer Group, which bought Dark Horse in 2022. While Mike Richardson continued to lead the company after the purchase, he has now been succeeded by Jay Komas, who will act as the temporary CEO.
Founded by Richardson in 1986, Dark Horse Comics became a major independent publisher, famous for comics like Hellboy and The Umbrella Academy, as well as licensed titles featuring Star Wars, Aliens, and Predator.

Embracer Announces Leadership Change
Embracer explained the decision is part of a plan to better connect Dark Horse with its other entertainment companies and projects.
Embracer Group announced changes to Dark Horse Comics to integrate it more closely with their other businesses and prepare it for future growth. These changes, which include personnel adjustments, are intended to improve teamwork between publishing, games, film, merchandise, and other areas. Embracer stated their aim is to ensure Dark Horse continues to thrive and provide excellent service to creators, partners, and fans.
Jay Komas Named Interim CEO
Embracer Group has appointed Jay Komas as its temporary CEO. He’s a gaming industry veteran with a proven track record of leading popular entertainment franchises on various gaming systems and platforms.
Dark Horse announced the hiring of Komas, who brings a wealth of experience managing popular brands across gaming, film, and merchandise. He previously held leadership positions at major entertainment companies like Electronic Arts, Activision Blizzard, and LucasArts. Dark Horse believes his expertise in growing and managing intellectual property will be crucial as they build on their history and adapt to the evolving entertainment world.

End Of An Era For Dark Horse
Mike Richardson started Dark Horse Comics after owning a comic book store in Oregon. He guided the company to become a leading independent publisher, particularly during the rise of independent comics in the 1990s.
The company grew beyond comics by creating movies and TV shows through its Dark Horse Entertainment division, including popular titles like The Umbrella Academy and various Hellboy films.
After Embracer Group bought Dark Horse Comics in 2022, Mike Richardson continued as CEO. This acquisition was part of Embracer’s strategy to grow into a broader range of entertainment, including comics, video games, movies, and related products.
His departure signals a significant change for the publisher, as Embracer Group works to reorganize its entertainment businesses.
