In today’s context, developing an individual Marvel storyline seems almost challenging, given that each project is interconnected within the expansive Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). The showrunner of Daredevil: Born Again, Dario Scardapane, has experienced this reality firsthand while organizing the Disney+ series. He swiftly realized how the broader MCU plans could potentially restrict creative autonomy.
As a dedicated cinephile, I’ve learned firsthand about the intricate dance between creativity and strategy in the film industry. In an exclusive chat with SFX magazine, Scardapane opened up about his early creative freedom, but admitted that some of his original ideas needed tweaking to align with Marvel’s larger strategic vision.
He pointed out that Marvel has a well-thought-out strategy, and the actions you’re involved in have far-reaching consequences. Furthermore, he mentioned that certain events from Daredevil (Matt Murdock)’s past encounters, such as his one-night stand with She-Hulk, will not feature in this particular narrative.
In simpler terms, I have a lot of flexibility in the storytelling for Daredevil within the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) until I reach the broader plan for the MCU. So, I tend to overlook some details from the larger universe. We carefully craft a distinct version of Daredevil, covering his challenges, the design of his suit, and where we find him in his life. You could say that Daredevil is part of the official MCU timeline, but certain events involving Spider-Man and She-Hulk, like his one-night stand with She-Hulk, aren’t central to our story.

The series resumes with retired character Matt Murdock, portrayed by Charlie Cox, re-embracing his Daredevil persona as Wilson Fisk, played by Vincent D’Onofrio, causes chaos in Hell’s Kitchen once more. Viewers will be thrilled to see familiar faces like Karen Page, Foggy Nelson, and Frank Castle, who are played by Deborah Ann Woll, Elden Henson, and Jon Bernthal respectively.
In addition to the anticipated revelations, Scardapane hinted at an unexpected character gracing the series, one that might seem out of place but seamlessly complements the narrative. Although it’s evident that Daredevil: Born Again is linked to the MCU, the production team intends to emphasize Matt’s personal tale over other Marvel-related happenings.
