In the latest sneak peek of “Daredevil: Born Again,” I, as a movie reviewer, find myself drawn into the intense exchange between Matt Murdock (portrayed by Charlie Cox) and Wilson Fisk (Vincent D’Onofrio). Seated in a diner, their conversation is fraught with tension. Fisk queries when Murdock ceased his role as a vigilante, to which Murdock cryptically replies, “A line was crossed.” This phrase suggests that, as Daredevil, he may have taken a life – either intentionally or unintentionally. The circumstances surrounding this act remain a mystery for now. But one thing is clear: the weight of this decision has led Murdock to seemingly abandon his Daredevil persona permanently. However, who was the victim and why, we’re left to wonder, with Marvel Comics likely holding the answers.
Previously, Daredevil, the vigilante hero of Hell’s Kitchen, has stepped over the line by taking a life. This event occurred in the 2019 relaunch of Daredevil, written by Chip Zdarsky and illustrated by Marco Checchetto. In this issue, Daredevil intervenes in a liquor store robbery, as usual for him. However, on this occasion, he was overly aggressive during the arrest, resulting in the unintentional death of a minor criminal, Leo Carraro, from head trauma. This incident sent Matt Murdock into a downward spiral, ridden with guilt. He briefly stepped away from his role as Daredevil, allowing Mayor Wilson Fisk to institute laws that prohibit masked heroes in New York City.
It appears that the upcoming series “Born Again” suggests Daredevil may have inadvertently killed a criminal during his crime-fighting activities, which aligns with certain comic book storylines. Unlike what’s often portrayed on screen, a hard blow to the head can indeed prove fatal rather than just causing unconsciousness. This potential event could have a significant impact on Matt Murdock, a devout Catholic who has sworn never to take a life. In this show, Mayor Fisk is advocating against vigilantes, and we might see a similar situation as depicted in Chip Zdarsky’s comics, which would seamlessly fit into the narrative of the series.
Indeed, “Born Again” might opt for a more intense storyline. It’s plausible that Daredevil intentionally took a life, rather than it being an accident. Given the return of Foggy Nelson (Elden Henson) and Karen Page (Deborah Ann Woll), who were initially absent from the series, it seems reasonable that something devastating might befall them, causing Matt Murdock to reach his breaking point. The demise of either Foggy or Karen could be the catalyst pushing Matt over the edge, leading him to commit a murder in retaliation for his friend’s death. However, we don’t foresee him transforming into a Punisher-like character. Instead, he might momentarily lose control and seek vengeance for one of his fallen companions.
Regardless of the circumstances, if Daredevil decides to retire in ‘Born Again’, we can be certain it won’t be a permanent goodbye. After all, nobody wants a ‘Daredevil’ series revolving around an ex-superhero wallowing in misery for multiple episodes. He has too many villains to confront. In time, he’ll conquer his feelings of guilt and regret, recognizing that he serves the city better by fighting crime than succumbing to it. This pattern was evident in the comics, and we anticipate a similar narrative arc for his Marvel Cinematic Universe introduction in ‘Daredevil: Born Again’. No matter who has been hurt when Daredevil oversteps the line.
Daredevil: Born Again hits Disney+ on March 4.
