Daredevil: Born Again Season 1, Episode 5 Recap: New Revelations from “With Interest”

In the fifth installment of “Daredevil: Born Again,” titled “With Interest,” we delve into a self-contained storyline that doesn’t involve the main characters Kingpin and Vanessa. Instead, it centers on Matt Murdock (played by Charlie Cox) along with several guest stars. Despite their absence, this 45-minute episode was gripping and enjoyable. Here’s what transpired in “With Interest” during the series.

Revelations From Daredevil: Born Again Season 1, Episode 5, “With Interest”

Matt Murdock’s Eventful St. Patrick’s Day

The story begins on St. Patrick’s Day. Matt Murdock is patiently waiting for an appointment at New York Mutual Bank. Due to his extraordinary hearing abilities, he can pick up the everyday conversations of each bank customer and staff member. He idly touches his damaged horns while waiting, seemingly lost in thought about resuming his role as Daredevil. Recent events have undoubtedly pushed him back into a mindset of vigilantism. Could Matt find contentment living a regular life?

A Surprise Ms. Marvel Character Appears (And a Young Avengers Hint?)

Next, Matt encounters Yusuf Khan (Mohan Kapur), who temporarily stands in for his superior, Steven Aldrich, as the assistant bank manager. Interestingly, Yusuf is Kamala Khan’s father, also known as Ms. Marvel. He casually reveals that Kamala is currently on holiday in California. One might speculate whether she’s catching up with her friend Bruno at Caltech or visiting Cassie Lang in San Francisco, which could hint at more Young Avengers intrigue. The possibility certainly piques our curiosity.

In conversation, I proudly acknowledge that Yusuf Khan hails from Jersey City – my hat’s off to him for celebrating Ms. Marvel as our local hero. He even flaunts his unique Funko Pop figurine of her, beaming with fatherly pride. (By the way, this could be the first hint that Funko is part of the MCU.) Unfortunately, Matt is trying to secure a loan to save his law practice, which has been stretched thin due to numerous pro bono cases. Regrettably, Matt and Kristen’s firm is overextended, and I find myself unable to assist them. However, I do so with grace and kindness, being the considerate person that I am.

In the Wrong Place at the Right Time

Shortly following Matt’s departure, a group of Irish robbers, armed and donning distinct ski masks, stormed into the bank with the intention of robbing it while keeping all customers as hostages. Yusef hid in his office and successfully contacted the authorities. Meanwhile, Matt, who had just left, overheard the robbery in progress and returned to the building, unwittingly becoming a hostage himself. Our masked criminals made their usual threats, but Matt, with his legal background, cautioned the leader that if anyone was harmed, the armed robbery charge would escalate to first-degree murder. In response, the leader chose to retaliate by striking Matt in the abdomen.

The man wearing a green mask, identified as Devlin, demands the presence of bank manager Steven Aldrich. However, as Mr. Khan had mentioned earlier to Matt, Aldrich isn’t present on the premises today. Devlin (played by Cillian O’Sullivan) requests Yusuf to open the bank vault, and he complies, just as the SWAT team arrives outside. But it becomes clear that Mr. Khan doesn’t truly know how to access the vault. Matt suggests to him to delay as much as possible when Devlin takes him to the vault below. Detective Angie Kim (portrayed by Ruibo Qian), who we were introduced to in episode one, steps into the role of chief hostage negotiator. After exchanging sarcastic remarks, Devlin requests three armored AVPs so he and his team can exit safely. And then he warns her that if they don’t grant his demands, every hostage inside will be shot.

He May Not Be in Costume, But Matt Lets the (Dare)Devil Out

In a show of goodwill, Devlin releases two hostages – a random woman from the crowd and Matt – perhaps regretting his earlier violent act against a blind individual. However, the woman refuses to depart, fearful of leaving her spouse behind. Matt steps up, ready to take his place. Initially, Devlin teases “the lawyer” about this action. Eventually, he concedes, allowing the couple to go free while Matt remains captive. As expected, our hero Matt has a strategy in mind.

One of the masked robbers leads Yusuf towards the bank’s secure vault, while Matt, planning something, claims he needs to use the restroom. In a twist, the criminal then escorts him to the bathroom instead. To buy time as instructed by Matt, Yusuf begins reciting irrelevant historical facts about the bank in front of the vault. As this unfolds, Matt, who has secretly left the scene, is making his way down the stairs using agile moves reminiscent of Daredevil. After a fierce tussle, he successfully knocks out the robber.

“What Kind of Lawyer Are You?”

The man wearing a blue hood over his face, who was robbing a bank, soon figured out that Yusuf was buying time and didn’t know the combination for the safe. Just as things were escalating towards violence, Matt suddenly showed up and knocked out the blue-masked individual. Using an Irish accent he’d picked up from the priests and nuns who raised him, Matt tricked Devlin over the walkie-talkie into thinking he was the blue masked robber, and that everything was under control. Yusuf explained that the safe had countless possible combinations, but Matt used his exceptional hearing to identify the sounds of the internal gears, allowing him to open it. Surprised, Yusuf asked Matt what kind of lawyer he was, to which Matt replied, “A very skilled one.” Interestingly enough, didn’t he say something similar to Peter Parker in No Way Home? It seems like he really enjoys using that line.

Matt and Yusuf Khan Get Stealthy

Detective Kim is persuading Devlin to wait an hour longer for his getaway vehicles. In response, Devlin gives her three minutes to crack a joke or else he’ll grant her only three more minutes. After delivering a distasteful joke that amuses Devlin, she manages to squeeze out ten extra minutes from him, with the alternative being he begins killing hostages. Inside the vault, Matt and Yusuf stumble upon countless safety deposit boxes. Yusuf informs Matt that each box necessitates two keys – one for the bankers, the other for the owners. Matt suddenly recalls that the unconscious robber he knocked out had the second key in his coat. Upon locating the appropriate safety deposit box, they find a rather substantial diamond within it.

Yusuf understands that this stone is extremely valuable to a group of common criminals, who in turn seem to be working for someone more powerful. Simultaneously, Matt begins to hear the hostages crying from upstairs, and also picks up on the fact that the SWAT team is getting ready to storm the bank, which means some of the hostages may not survive. Therefore, Matt informs Devlin that the police are going to enter the building, and gives him the diamond as an offer. As he throws the gemstone towards Devlin, the SWAT team bursts in with tear gas grenades, causing a frenzy.

Daredevil Puts on a Different Red Mask

In the chaos, Devlin slips away, donning a police uniform. He passes a woman, who we believed was a hostage, a bag containing a diamond and tells her to give it to Luca. This reveals that he’s been working for one of the five families mentioned in earlier episodes. Disguised as a cop, Devlin aims to exit unnoticed with the police, but Matt tracks him down. He grabs one of his gang’s red ski-masks, engaging in another violent street fight. Although not Daredevil just yet, he manages to play the role of a red-masked vigilante. Simultaneously, Devlin’s partner discovers that the diamond she was holding was merely candy.

The following day, Matt encounters Yusuf at the bank, and Yusuf informs Matt that the stolen diamond was never found. In response, Yusuf extends an invitation to Matt for dinner at his residence in Jersey City, which Matt accepts eagerly. This might imply a potential future collaboration between Daredevil and Ms. Marvel. It seems like Matt frequently comes across superheroes during casual gatherings, as he previously met Bruce Banner at a family barbecue, as depicted in She-Hulk. As Matt prepares to depart, Yusuf notices that on his desk, among the candies, Matt has left behind the missing diamond as a token of some kind.

In this post, we wrap up episode 5 of Daredevil: Born Again. In the upcoming episodes, we’ll delve deeper into the primary narrative of Born Again as the enigmatic serial killer Muse takes center stage. And let me tell you, things start to take a grim turn from there.
