In the Marvel universe, not many heroes can match Matt Murdock, also known as Daredevil, in terms of romantic encounters. To put it simply, Matt Murdock, Esq., seems to have courted almost every unattached woman in Marvel Comics. From Elektra and Karen Page to Echo and the Black Cat, his list of love interests is extensive. However, one relationship that stood out for its longevity and passion was with fellow hero Natasha Romanoff, known as the Black Widow. So far, their romance has not been portrayed in live-action, but given Romanoff’s current situation (her death), it might be possible to witness their dynamic duo on screen in the upcoming “Avengers: Secret Wars,” should it offer a way for fans to see these two extraordinary characters together as a formidable couple.
Daredevil and Black Widow Become a Couple in the ’70s Marvel Comics
Back in the vibrant world of Marvel comics during the ’70s, I found myself deeply engrossed in the dynamic duo of Daredevil and Black Widow. For quite some time, these two crime-fighting powerhouses shared both the pages of their adventures and a romantic bond. In 1972, the original Marvel’s Daredevil comic series was rechristened as Daredevil and the Black Widow, a change that lasted from issue #192 to #107 in ’74. However, after this period, the series reverted back to its original title, yet Natasha continued to be Matt Murdock’s devoted partner, safeguarding the streets of San Francisco until issue #124 in ’75. This partnership struck a chord with comic enthusiasts, offering an intriguing take on the classic DC duo of Batman and Catwoman, but with a more practical and engaging twist.
Back in 1975, with our star power soaring high, I, a passionate fan, managed to secure the rights for Daredevil – the Man Without Fear and the enigmatic Russian spy, Natasha – from the then-married couple, Angela Bowie (wife of the legendary David Bowie). The dream was to bring their adventures to life on the small screen. Though we never got to film a pilot episode, we did capture some electrifying promotional shots for our unrealized series.
Regrettably, our partnership didn’t last much longer in the comic book world as the show never materialized. Matt found himself entangled with socialite Heather Glenn, while Natasha grew weary of Matt’s controlling nature. As he made his way back to New York City, she decided to stay put on the West Coast and established the formidable super team known as the Champions.
After their split, Matt and Natasha maintained a strong bond, which stands out as one of the most robust post-romantic friendships in the Marvel universe. Despite not reuniting romantically, they have fought together on multiple occasions. Whenever they crossed paths again, there was an undeniable chemistry between them that ignited sparks. However, due to certain off-screen circumstances, these characters have yet to meet or date in contemporary live-action productions. This is surprising given the popularity of Charlie Cox’s Daredevil and Scarlett Johansson’s Black Widow from their roles in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. It’s truly unfortunate that this potential pairing has not been explored further.
Live-action Daredevil and Black Widow Never Had a Chance to Meet in the MCU
Initially, it wasn’t certain if Charlie Cox’s character on Netflix’s “Daredevil” in 2015 was part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), as the TV shows produced by Marvel Television weren’t allowed to feature characters from Marvel Studios and vice versa. The cancellation of “Daredevil” in 2018 and Natasha’s sacrifice in “Avengers: Endgame” a year later appeared to close any chance for these two heroes to have romantic interactions, let alone become lovey-dovey. However, in the upcoming “Avengers: Secret Wars,” there’s speculation that Daredevil and Black Widow could share a kiss and team up to fight, thanks to a concept called Battleworld.
Avengers: Secret Wars Could Break Reality and Let Matt and Nat’s Love Emerge
In the storyline of “Secret Wars,” multiple realities are expected to merge into a single new world, called Battleworld. This diverse planet is governed by the tyrannical ruler, God Emperor Doom, who will be played by Robert Downey Jr. in this alternate universe. One realm within this jumble could be one where Hawkeye gave his life for the Soul Stone instead of Black Widow. In this case, our version of the Black Widow might encounter and fall in love with Daredevil in “Secret Wars.” Due to the chaos of Multiversal events, we may finally witness the on-screen union of these two characters at last.
Daily speculations persist about which actors might appear in “Avengers: Doomsday” and “Secret Wars,” leaving fans guessing who will grace our screens in one (or both) movies. Charlie Cox initially claimed he’d be in “Doomsday,” but later recanted, leading to questions whether he’s actually in “Secret Wars.” Despite Scarlett Johansson not confirming a Marvel Cinematic Universe comeback, if the original Avengers are returning, it seems unlikely they would exclude her. Here’s hoping that the eagerly awaited Avengers film will offer these beloved characters a long-awaited chance to shine together.
