Danny DeVito Recalls Crushing on Co-star Michelle Pfeiffer During Batman Returns: ‘She Was a Goddess’

Danny DeVito recently opened up about his experience working with Michelle Pfeiffer in Tim Burton’s 1992 movie Batman Returns. In a conversation for Variety’s Actors on Actors series, DeVito referred to Pfeiffer as a ‘divine figure’, and admitted that he had feelings of attraction towards her. With Pfeiffer portraying Catwoman to his character, the Penguin, he confessed that her presence made him feel somewhat self-conscious.

If I had known she was appearing in a scene that day, I would have been a bundle of nerves. I applied more makeup than usual, even asking for an additional layer, as it seemed particularly challenging.

DeVito made it clear that it was his on-screen persona, Oswald Cobblepot, who displayed lustful behavior, not himself. He chuckled at Colin Farrell’s question about whether Michelle Pfeiffer had ever needed to call security because of him.

DeVito commented, “It seemed to me she took a liking to it. She enjoyed Oswald.” His statement implies that Pfeiffer found his portrayal of the Penguin engaging. Despite embodying an unsavory character on screen, DeVito emphasized he never internalized that role off set.

When inquired about bringing the character home, Danny DeVito asserted that he returns home to his wife Rhea Perlman and their kids instead. Married since 1982, DeVito and Perlman are parents to three children: Lucy, Gracie, and Jack.

Despite parting ways in 2017, they continue to be legally wedded. Devito mentioned that even when he portrays harsh or reprehensible characters on screen, he discards that image as soon as he steps off the set.

Currently, Michelle Pfeiffer is still captivating fans with awe-inspiring selfies without makeup, showcasing her timeless beauty. In April, she received a hand and footprint ceremony at the TCL Chinese Theatre in Los Angeles, gracing the event in a stylish black suit and satin blouse.

Since 1993, Pfeiffer has been wedded to television writer and producer David E. Kelley. Together, they have two grown-up kids – Claudia, aged 32, and John, who is 30 years old.

During their conversation, DeVitto and Farrell shared their thoughts about alcohol consumption. Since 2005, Farrell has been sober, inspiring DeVito to moderate his drinking. DeVito confessed that he occasionally sips wine and enjoys gin martinis with cigars, but when he’s focusing on his health, he abstains from alcohol completely. Both actors concurred that they feel significantly better without excessive drinking.
