It seems that if the report is accurate, many of us would be excited to support James Gunn’s casting choice for the upcoming Clayface movie, as it appears Daniel Radcliffe might be considered to play the lead role.
Update: James Gunn clarified that the report about him directing the project is untrue. Since a director has not been chosen, casting hasn’t begun yet. Daniel Craig may be excellent, but he hasn’t been contacted or considered for the role. Therefore, this rumor is completely false. (Posted on Threads)

What does the rumor say?
The rumor originates from Jeff Sneider (through X), who suggests Daniel Radcliffe could take on the role of Basil Karlo in James Watkin’s upcoming film, “Clayface.” On Friday, a major DCU press event took place, during which Gunn and Peter Safran confirmed that discussions are underway for Watkins to direct.
What is Clayface about?
Centers on a B-list actor
Although no specific plot details have been disclosed yet, industry sources suggest that “Clayface” will veer away from its traditional horror villain role in the Batman universe. Instead, the main character may not be portrayed as the infamous antagonist we’re accustomed to.
The story revolves around a B-list actor who discovers a means to maintain his relevance by injecting himself with an unusual substance. Unbeknownst to him, this transformation allows him to mold his face and body into a pliable form of clay.
Not going with the blob-like version
It appears that the backstory for DCU’s Clayface, initially introduced in “Creature Commandos”, is being revealed here. Although Alan Tudyk provided the character’s voice, his role was relatively minor, meaning Tudyk won’t be reprising this role for the live-action version, unlike other voice actors working under Gunn (Tudyk voices Doctor Phosphorous, while Frank Grillo portrays Rick Flag Sr. in both “Superman” and “Peacemaker” Season 2).
Basil Karlo origin story for the DCU
In the world of comics, the initial Clayface character is Basil Karlo, a minor actor who turned to criminal activities by adopting the persona of a villain he had played in a horror movie. Matt Reeves, known for his gritty and realistic approach, is attached to this project, making Basil Karlo a strong possibility. Additionally, the Clayface film will reportedly have a more budget-friendly scope suitable for a horror production, allowing them to minimize costly CGI effects for the gooey, blob-like character that fans typically associate with Clayface.
Daniel Radcliffe, famously recognized for his role as Harry Potter, also boasts a resume that includes horror films like ‘Horns’. Fans even advocated for him to take on the part of Wolverine in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. In my opinion, casting Radcliffe in ‘Clayface’ is a shrewd decision.
Release info
DC Studios and Gunn have set Clayface for a September 11, 2026 release.
