It’s widely believed that if the rumor is correct, everyone might be interested in the casting choice for the upcoming Clayface film, given that James Gunn reportedly wants Daniel Radcliffe to take on the lead role.
What does the rumor say?
As a movie enthusiast, I’ve picked up some intriguing chatter about the upcoming Clayface film – apparently, Daniel Radcliffe is being considered for the role of Basil Karlo. This tidbit comes from Jeff Sneider, who’s usually well-informed. Notably, at yesterday’s DCU press event, James Gunn and Peter Safran confirmed that James Watkins is in discussions to direct the movie. Exciting times ahead for us film buffs!
What is Clayface about?
Centers on a B-list actor
Although no specific plot details have been disclosed yet, it appears that the movie “Clayface” will depart from its traditional villainous role in Batman stories. Instead, the main character may be presented differently and not as the infamous antagonist we’re accustomed to.
The storyline is about a B-list actor who discovers a way to keep himself in the spotlight by transforming himself into malleable clay, thanks to some mysterious substance. He can now change the shape of his face and body at will.
Not going with the blob-like version
It’s speculated that this is the backstory for DCU’s Clayface, who made his debut in “Creature Commandos.” Although Alan Tudyk lent his voice to the character, his role wasn’t significant. Consequently, Tudyk won’t portray the live-action version, unlike other voice actors in Gunn’s productions who will embody their live-action counterparts (Tudyk voices Doctor Phosphorous, while Frank Grillo plays Rick Flag Sr. in Gunn’s “Superman” and “Peacemaker” Season 2).
In the world of comics, the initial Clayface character is Basil Karlo, who transitioned from being a B-list actor into a life of crime by adopting the persona of a villain he played in a horror movie. Given Matt Reeves’ penchant for creating realistic and serious storylines, it seems plausible that Basil Karlo will be the chosen character. Additionally, given that Clayface is set to have a lower budget suitable for a horror film, they won’t need to invest heavily in CGI to create the gooey, blob-like version that fans are accustomed to seeing.
Undeniably, Daniel Radcliffe has made a name for himself, particularly through his iconic role as Harry Potter. Yet, he’s also shown his versatility with monster movie roles like Horns. In fact, many fans have dreamed of him embodying the MCU’s Wolverine. To me, casting Radcliffe in Clayface seems like a brilliant decision.
Release info
DC Studios and Gunn have set Clayface for a September 11, 2026 release.
