Daniel Kaluuya Produces and Ayo Edebiri Writes Live-Action Barney Movie!

Following his exceptional performances in 2017’s “Get Out” and 2018’s “Black Panther”, Daniel Kaluuya has certainly earned a wide range of opportunities, and we can’t wait to catch his next project. However, this upcoming venture will undoubtedly challenge our expectations. For those who don’t have young children or haven’t had the misfortune of having a particular song stuck in their head for the past 25 years, the Oscar-nominated actor is involved in creating a film about everyone’s favorite purple dinosaur – Barney! Even more intriguing, rising talent Ayo Edebiri from “The Bear” will pen the live-action “Barney” movie and potentially take on a role as well.

Actor Daniel Kaluuya, along with his production company 59%, is collaborating with Mattel Films and Valparaiso Pictures for a live-action film adaptation of a beloved children’s television character. Recent updates suggest that Ayo Edebiri will be part of the project, contributing to the screenplay and potentially starring in the upcoming “Barney” movie as well. Reports hint that Kaluuya is not currently planning to act in the film at present.

PBS Kids

People are familiar with the fact that a large purple dinosaur, famous for its role in Barney and Friends, emphasized friendship, kindness, and unity through singing and dancing over the course of 14 seasons and 268 episodes, airing from 1992 to 2009.

Though it may appear unconventional for a renowned young actor from Hollywood, Kaluuya articulated in a statement the reasons behind reviving the character for a fresh audience. As he put it, “Barney was a common presence in many of our childhoods, only to vanish and become shrouded in mystery.” They are eager to delve into this intriguing contemporary hero and determine if his message of love can endure the passage of time.

Will it endure the passage of time? Listening to those lyrics only makes that tune lodge itself in our memories, permanently. No matter if it’s a new film or not, Barney will forever remain etched in our recollections.

Any studio would jump at the chance to collaborate with Daniel Kaluuya following his recent successes, but Robbie Brenner from Mattel Films believes that Kaluuya will help craft a fresh take on Barney that appeals to everyone. Brenner stated in a statement, “Partnering with Daniel Kaluuya allows us to reimagine Barney in an unprecedented way, one that will catch audiences off guard and challenge their expectations. The project will tap into the nostalgia of the brand in a way that will resonate with adults while keeping today’s children entertained.” Ayo Edebiri, another talented actor, is also on board, and it’s unlikely they’ll produce anything less than exceptional work together.

We’re confident that Mattel will likely have the opportunity to sell countless toys associated with the film, given its popularity. After all, even though Barney promotes understanding and love, he can also serve as a lesson in capitalism.

Mattel Films has been actively working since the successful release of the movie Barbie, starring Margot Robbie, and they’re aiming to achieve similar success in the future. Additionally, the production of Barney is being handled by Rowan Riley and Amandla Crichlow from 59%, as well as David Carrico, Adam Paulsen, and Bobby Hoppey from Valparaiso Pictures. Kevin McKeon from Mattel will supervise the project.

In simpler terms, are folks without young kids still planning to watch whatever Daniel Kaluuya takes part in? Most likely. We admire him, we appreciate Barney, and let’s not forget, the purple dinosaur appreciates us as well!
