As a die-hard Bond fan and an observer of the cinematic universe, I have to admit that Daniel Craig‘s journey as James Bond has been nothing short of mesmerizing. From his raw portrayal of the legendary MI6 agent in Casino Royale to his poignant farewell in No Time to Die, he has undeniably left an indelible mark on the franchise.
In a recent conversation, Daniel Craig expressed concerns about portraying James Bond, highlighting the traditional concept of masculinity as a significant challenge throughout his 15-year tenure as the iconic MI6 agent. In his most recent remarks, he described the character as ‘unrealistic.’
In an interview with The New Yorker, Craig explained that he found the conventional notion of masculinity amusing yet essential for the success of his role in Luca Guadagnino’s film, Queer. Daniel Craig has portrayed James Bond in five films since Casino Royale in 2006, concluding with No Time to Die in 2021, where his character’s fate was permanently decided.
When asked about his thoughts on portraying the most well-known symbol of masculinity, Craig responded, “One of my main concerns about taking on this role would be the concept of masculinity.
He frequently found it amusing, yet ridiculing it won’t make it effective. Instead, one must embrace it, he stated, even though he clarified that he’d never pass judgment on a role he portrayed.
Since my stint as Bond, I’ve ventured into various roles beyond the franchise, such as the captivating Knives Out series and an adaptation of William S. Burroughs’ intriguing novel, Queer. Stepping away from Bond opened up a new creative horizon for me, yet I soon recognized that fame can have its heavy price on one’s privacy. On the subject of my film, Queer, I found myself captivated by the complexities of masculinity and how it is often artificially molded by societal norms.
Craig openly admitted that his character underwent a significant transformation while portraying 007, stating that he became an entirely different person during this time. Moreover, he firmly rejected the notion that “Queer” was in any way connected to his Bond legacy.
Speaking about embracing a character that deals with the complexities of being Queer, he remarked, “To be honest, James Bond has been a significant part of my life for nearly 20 years. When I first played him, I was someone else. Now, I’ve transformed into an entirely new person. This film isn’t a reaction to that past role. I’m not trying to prove anything. But at the time I was doing Bond, I wouldn’t have been ready for this project. It would have seemed like an attempt to prove something.
Under the direction of Luca Guadagnino, A24’s film titled “Queer” is set in 1950s Mexico City. This movie revolves around an American expat living abroad (Daniel Craig), who develops a romantic interest in a younger student, Eugene, portrayed by Drew Starkey, famous for his role in Love Simon.
