Daniel Craig and Luca Guadagnino Teaming Up to Bring SGT. ROCK to Life for DC Studios

As a seasoned gamer and comic book enthusiast with over three decades of immersion in the rich tapestry of DC Universe lore, I must confess that Luca Guadagnino’s foray into the world of Sgt. Rock has left me both intrigued and apprehensive. The man behind critically acclaimed dramas like “Call Me By Your Name” and “A Bigger Splash,” certainly brings a unique perspective to the table, but whether his quirky style will translate well into an action-packed blockbuster remains to be seen.

It’s been revealed that a new movie set in James Gunn and Peter Safran’s DC Universe is on the horizon, and it’s an unexpected one. As reported by Deadline, Luca Guadagnino – the Oscar-nominated Italian director known for this year’s critically acclaimed films ‘Challengers’ and ‘Queer’ – will be collaborating with his ‘Queer’ co-star Daniel Craig on a live-action adaptation of DC Comics’ World War II series, ‘Sgt. Rock’. Guadagnino has also announced plans to remake ‘American Psycho’, but his DC Studios film appears to be moving forward first, as the script is already well underway.

Sergeant Franklin John Rock has a rich background in DC Comics, debuting in the series “Our World at War” in 1959 as a practical, John Wayne-like military figure. This character was brought to life by writer Robert Kanigher, known for his Silver Age Wonder Woman comics, and artist Joe Kubert. Throughout World War II, he led his battalion, Easy Company, through numerous battles. His popularity resulted in him getting his own self-titled series in 1977, which continued until 1988, even after other World War II-focused comics had ended. Remarkably, the duration of Sgt. Rock’s war adventures extended 25 years beyond the real-life war itself. In DC Comics’ continuity, Sgt. Rock met his end with the last bullet fired in the final battle of World War II.

Luca Guadagnino is a very surprising choice for a potential blockbuster DC film, after having directed only quirky dramas. Another surprising choice is the character of Sgt. Rock himself. A Sgt. Rock movie was once planned in the ’80s, meant to star Arnold Schwarzenegger. But it never came together. In the comics, Sgt. Rock rarely crossed over with DC heroes from the era. He mostly remained in a more realistic bubble, away from superheroes. But maybe Gunn and Luca Guadagnino have other ideas, and hope to tie him more into DCU lore. We could see him working with the World War II era Creature Commandos. When it comes to Sgt. Rock, we can’t wait to see what DC Studios have cooked up.
