Dandadan Team Says Anime Will Compete With Manga’s High Points; Here’s How

As a dedicated manga enthusiast who’s been following Dandadan since its early days, I must admit that the anticipation for this anime adaptation is both exhilarating and nerve-wracking! The promise of bringing Tatsu’s masterpiece to life on screen has left fans like me eagerly awaiting every new detail.

Later this year, the TV anime adaptation of the widely acclaimed manga “Dandadan” by Yukinobu Tatsu is set to air. The creators are aiming to capture the best aspects of the manga, which has garnered significant popularity following the announcement of its new anime version. Fans will get to witness some stunning panels and scenes from the original work when it premieres this Fall.

In some aspects, this situation has been like a two-sided weapon: on one hand, it amplifies excitement for the Dandadan anime among fans, but on the other, it puts immense pressure because comparisons between the anime and the original manga are inevitable. Aware of this challenge, Hiroshi Kamei from Mainichi Broadcasting System discussed it during Anime Expo 2024 this past summer, highlighting how they are working to ensure that the anime stands out amidst competition with its source material.

Initially, Kamei pointed out that the animation is strikingly beautiful, which seems to be what many people are seeking today. Upon initially reading the manga, he felt a certain richness or fullness about it – the manga is like a stage bursting with content. However, animation isn’t just images, is it? It’s about sound, color, rhythm, and pace. Kamei aimed to emphasize these elements in this broadcast to truly capture the essence of it.

Kamei went on to detail how the anime chose unique approaches to distinguish itself from the original manga. Essentially, if they had copied the detailed artwork directly from the manga, the scenes might not have been as effective. Instead, they opted for a simpler style that retained the essence of the characters’ charm.

“Regarding the color schemes and pacing of the anime, I believe it has a greater intensity compared to other series. I suspect the emotions evoked by reading the Dandadan manga and watching the anime won’t vary greatly. This is achieved by changing the battle settings, creating a sense of chaos. We aim to make the anime more competitive, ensuring it’s not solely reliant on the aesthetic appeal of the manga. While the manga certainly has style, if we followed that approach, the anime wouldn’t truly stand out.”

The narrative of Dandadan revolves around Momo Ayase, a teenager attending high school who firmly believes in the existence of spirits but is skeptical about aliens. On the other hand, her classmate Ken Takakura holds the opposite view, trusting in extraterrestrials but not ghosts. In an attempt to prove their beliefs, they strike a wager: Ayase will explore locations linked to the supernatural and the occult, while Takakura seeks out places related to aliens.

In a twist of events, Ayase is kidnapped by an alien group, who inadvertently activate her dormant psychic abilities due to unblocking her chakras. Simultaneously, Takakura gets possessed by a spirit, giving it control over his body. Leveraging Ayase’s newfound powers and Takakura’s possessed form, they jointly vanquish the aliens. As the narrative unfolds, both characters grapple with curing Takakura’s possession, battling spirits and extraterrestrials, and nurturing feelings of affection towards each other – forming the crux of the ensuing tale.

In October, the anime series titled “Dandadan” is set to debut for the first time. However, as of now, a specific release date hasn’t been disclosed. You can catch its new episodes simultaneously with their Japanese airing on platforms like Crunchyroll, Netflix, Hulu, ADN, and Muse.
