On May 30, 2025, the film “Dandadan: Evil Eye” was first shown in Asia. Starting this weekend, it’s hitting the screens of cinemas all over North America and Europe. The movie has garnered positive reviews and is projected to be a financial hit, ensuring another successful season for the series.
Initially penned by Yukinobu Tatsu, the manga “Dandadan” was well-received within Japan, but its global popularity skyrocketed following the debut of the anime adaptation. An illustrative case is that in just 2.5 years since its release, the manga had approximately 3.2 million copies circulating by November 2023; however, after the anime was released, it sold an extra 2 million copies within a single year.
The second installment of the series will be released on July 3rd, 2025, and its new co-director, Abel Góngora, along with Fūga Yamashiro, has shared that anticipation for the upcoming season is incredibly high.
Following an exceptionally prosperous debut season, there’s a lot of anticipation surrounding Season 2 of Dandadan. Having watched Evil Eye, it’s evident that the series maintains its consistent quality, which undeniably fuels high expectations.
Abel Gongora, responsible for directing the acclaimed opening sequence during the first season, has been promoted to a co-director position. In recent interviews, he discussed the anticipation surrounding the second season, as well as his professional bond with Yamashiro, who will be back as director for Season 2.
In his own words, Góngora expressed that the bar is set high for this upcoming season, and it’s something he’s worried about. However, he considers himself fortunate because he has Yūki Yamashiro, the director from Season 1, on board to assist. They are striving to create an even better season, but only time will tell. As of now, they are diligently working on it.
In a conversation following the credits of Evil Eye, similar ideas were expressed, yet Góngora focused more on his bond with Yamashiro.
We’ve split up the tasks for the episodes, not necessarily equally, but we’re not handling the same episodes. We review and make decisions together on numerous aspects, learning a great deal from each other in the process – I hope he’s learning as well! Our shared perspectives on animation and cinema make our collaboration seamless, as he pointed out.
During the film’s interview, Yamashiro disclosed that the two directors had varying methods for specific scenes and instances. Although it wasn’t possible for Góngora to execute his ideas entirely, they were able to reach an agreeable compromise. This balance will be advantageous for fans when Season 2 premieres.
