Daemon Makes a Vital Choice in HOUSE OF THE DRAGON’s Finale

As a longtime fan of George R.R. Martin’s epic saga, I must say that the season two finale of “House of the Dragon” left me utterly captivated. The complex characters and their intricate relationships have always been one of the series’ strongest points, and this episode was no exception.

In the final episode of season two for “House of the Dragon,” we were led to expect significant or even fatal events, based on the trailer. However, what unfolded wasn’t exactly what we anticipated; instead, it offered some unexpected twists. One such twist revolves around Daemon, who has been wrestling with his guilt and relentless ambition for the throne. Throughout the season, he’s had unsettling visions, including one in this episode that hinted at future events from “Game of Thrones.” Often, Daemon seems to contemplate betraying Rhaenyra and seizing the throne for himself. Yet, in an unexpected turn, Daemon chooses to stand by Rhaenyra as queen in the finale of “House of the Dragon,” pledging his allegiance to her as the rightful heir.

Ser Alfred Broome Betrays Rhaenyra and Tries to Get Daemon to Turn On Her, Too

In the given episode, it’s Sir Alfred Broome, one of Rhaenyra’s advisors, who visits Daemon. With just two days left before his march towards King’s Landing, Daemon pauses to hear out Broome. Sir Alfred clarifies that he will never side with usurpers. He admits to having pledged his forces to Rhaenyra, but they are on the brink of major conflicts. He points out that Daemon has mobilized an army, while Rhaenyra seems to be making uncertain decisions. Sir Alfred suggests that as a leader of men, Daemon should assert his claim to the throne. He believes that what they urgently require is a King. Hearing this, Daemon seems to acknowledge a possible betrayal but gives a sly smile, hinting at potential deceit.

From the sidelines, Ser Simon Strong quietly observes these events and senses something amiss. He swiftly dispatches a message to Dragonstone, warning Rhaenyra of an impending danger. (This man is truly admirable.) Despite her initial displeasure, she promptly responacts, making her way to Harrenhal to confront Daemon head-on. (I can’t help but appreciate this man.)

Daemon’s Major Vision of Game of Thrones Events Changes Him Forever

Meanwhile, Daemon is sleeping at Harrenhal when he sees Alys River at his bedside. He follows her to the godswood, where she poignantly speaks to him. “When you came here, you were a closed fist,” Alys begins. “You wished to bend the world to your will. But you’ve discovered, I think, that this world will not be governed. There are omens here for those who seek them…”

She queries if he wants to “find out what’s destined for him,” and he nods silently in agreement, showing readiness to uncover his future. Daemon reaches out to the weirwood tree as blood flows from its base. He witnesses several significant occurrences yet to unfold, including a raven, a White Walker and their army, Daenerys with her three dragon eggs (and hatched offspring), and Rhaenyra seated on the Iron Throne. He then encounters Haeleana, who reminds him that it’s all part of a story, and he understands his role within it.

Upon Rhaenyra and Addam of Hull’s arrival, she confronts Daemon who breaks through a crowd of men. She has Syrax by her side, prepared to grill any potential troublemakers at a moment’s notice, which seems reassuring. She queries him about his loyalty declaration in the presence of everyone, and there ensues an extended moment of awkward silence. He replies to her in High Valyrian, forecasting that this war is merely the start, and winter with its darkness and despair is fast approaching (quite a shock!).

Daemon Bends the Knee to Rhaenyra in House of the Dragon‘s Finale

Daemon informs her that he witnessed the event and they need to stand firm against it. He adds that the realm’s salvation lies in a leader who can unify it, and that leader is Rhaenyra. Daemon pledges allegiance to her, declaring her as the rightful queen whom they will all serve until their last breath or the conclusion of their tale. Only Ser Alfred Broome departs into the crowd without bending the knee. Overwhelmed yet resolute, Rhaenyra displays her emotions but also cautions Daemon that if he deserts her again, it could be his downfall. I’m elated to see my son back in action and hopefully free from those persistent hauntings.

It’s moving to witness Daemon, in due course, submitting himself and supporting his wife, Rhaenyra. This action aligns with his character development from the “Fire & Blood” book series, where he ultimately aids Rhaenyra in amassing an army and having a less unsettling stint at Harrenhal. Now reunited, they boast a formidable force of men and dragons. As we progress into “House of the Dragon” season three, we’ll observe if their alliance triumphs when they confront an all-out war.
