Cynthia Erivo recently discussed the ongoing rumors about her relationship with Ariana Grande. She spoke to Stylist magazine about the speculation, which started after they collaborated on the movie Wicked.

Cynthia Erivo was surprised by the public’s reaction to her close friendship with another woman. Many fans initially assumed they must be a couple, unable to accept a purely platonic bond. Erivo explained that people either thought their connection was fake, created for publicity, or that there was a romantic relationship. She hadn’t previously discussed this, but noted the strong public fascination with the nature of their bond.

The actress believes that meaningful friendships between women aren’t often portrayed in media or public life. She explained, “There’s a lack of open discussion about genuine, deep connections between women, even though they’re common.” She also pointed out that people often feel awkward around strong emotional bonds. “We’re not encouraged to recognize how valuable these kinds of relationships can be, so seeing them can make people uncomfortable.”

I was fascinated to hear Cynthia Erivo talk about working with Ariana Grande on ‘The Awardist.’ She explained that we have pretty different approaches to getting into character. I really need quiet time to focus, while Ariana likes to connect with people first. Apparently, knowing this, and having very little time to prepare, actually helped us both bring something special to the performance – we really fed off each other’s energy!

She’s currently starring in Dracula in London’s West End, and the role is incredibly demanding – she plays 23 different characters in a single performance! She explained that it requires a lot of mental agility, as she has to fully understand each character’s personality. She also noted that the performance has a rhythmic, almost musical quality to it.

It feels like conducting an orchestra – each character has their own unique personality and pace. I’m focusing on what I love most: developing characters and making them feel real. It’s challenging with so many to manage, but I’m really enjoying the process.
