Cynthia Erivo has finally spoken about the rumors linking her romantically to her Wicked co-star, Ariana Grande. In a recent interview, the 39-year-old actress explained that while they are very close, their connection is purely platonic.
Erivo confirmed that she and Grande are simply close friends, not lovers. The speculation about a romance started during the long press tour for their movie, Wicked: For Good.
Many noticed the stars’ affectionate behavior – they often held hands and hugged in public – and fans began to wonder if their chemistry was something more than friendship.
Cynthia Erivo thinks people are so interested in her relationship with another woman because society doesn’t fully understand strong female friendships. In an interview with Stylist Magazine, she explained that many people have trouble believing two women can be very close without being romantically involved. She believes this lack of understanding led some to assume they were either faking their connection for the public or were secretly dating.
Erivo believes that very close, non-romantic friendships can sometimes make people uneasy. She points out that society doesn’t always recognize the value of these relationships, despite how positive and impactful they can be.
She’s sharing her thoughts to encourage a different perspective – to show that having a truly deep connection with a friend is a valid and meaningful experience that shouldn’t be immediately seen as romantic.
Despite ongoing public interest in their friendship, both Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande are focused on major career milestones. Erivo is currently performing a unique one-woman version of Dracula on London’s West End stage at the Noël Coward Theatre, earning rave reviews for playing every character in the story during its limited 16-week run. Meanwhile, Ariana Grande is gearing up for her “Eternal Sunshine” world tour, launching in Oakland this June – her first major tour in seven years. This follows a successful awards season for her role as Glinda. In addition to music, Ariana has just finished filming the fourth Meet the Parents movie, titled Focker-in-Law, and is reportedly joining the next season of American Horror Story.
Good news for fans of the witches from Wicked! The movie Wicked: For Good will be available to stream on Peacock starting March 20th. Later this summer, it will also be available on Netflix, so you’ll have two options to enjoy the conclusion of their story.
