Cyberpunk 2077 on Nintendo Switch 2: Performance vs quality mode

It’s hard to believe that at launch, Cyberpunk 2077 struggled to run on a PlayStation 4, but now it’s playable on a handheld device like the Switch 2. Interestingly, it runs much smoother on the Switch 2 than it did on the PS4. Although re-purchasing the game might not be worthwhile if you’ve already played it, the portability and depth of Cyberpunk in this format makes it almost a must-have for the novelty factor alone.

Nevertheless, it’s important to acknowledge that the console has certain boundaries, and the choice between playing the game in performance or quality settings is a matter of personal preference. To help clarify each option, let’s take a closer look at both modes.

Performance or quality mode for Cyberpunk 2077 on Switch 2?

As a game enthusiast, I’d personally suggest you try out the “Performance Mode” if you prefer to play your games in handheld format. Though there isn’t a significant difference in performance between handheld and docked modes, what truly stands out is that Variable Refresh Rate (VRR) is only accessible in handheld mode. Therefore, when you opt for Performance Mode, which aims for 40fps, your gaming experience will be quite smooth.

In ‘docked mode’, the absence of Variable Refresh Rate (VRR) can cause the 40 frames per second (fps) not to stay consistent while playing in performance mode, resulting in a somewhat uneven framerate. Therefore, for a smoother experience when using the dock, we recommend choosing the high-quality setting, as you’ll get a steady 30fps rather than the choppy 40.
